Mariga’s advice on choosing the best sunscreen / SPF
Skin Essentials by Mariga SPF30 Day Cream
This time of year there are sunscreen products available everywhere you look, from the supermarket to the petrol station and of course online and in-clinic from Skin Essentials by Mariga!
It is a good thing that people are now so aware of the damage too much UV exposure can cause, but it also makes it confusing for the consumer when there are so many products available to choose from. In this article, Mariga clarifies what to choose and how to use when it comes to your facial sunscreen. (Of course, you need sunscreen all over when you are exposing any skin to the sun but today we are just looking at facial care). Continue reading →
When we say dry skin, we mean skin that is naturally low in oils (lipids). This skin type will need more lipids and nourishment supply from the outside than another skin type. Lipid dry skin NEVER changes, if you have lower than average oil production this cannot be changed but it can be managed very well to give comfort and radiance to even the driest skin – with commitment and compliance!
Lipid dry skin has an intrinsic tendency to low natural oil production. It will look dull, thin, flaky and tired. It may have a tendency to redness, especially across the cheeks, with some whiteheads and visible capillaries.
Lipid dry skin will react quickly to outside factors such as wind, central heating, air conditioning and cold which can make it feel itchy or sting. It will be slow to heal and may scar easily.
You can already see how this skin type may easily be mistaken for ‘sensitive’.
The lack of natural oils in the skin impairs it’s defence and protection allowing it to become inflamed by outside aggressors, therefore the treatment protocol is to restore the oil balance to strengthen this barrier.

Clinical treatments for dry skin will consist of gentle facials using products that are high in essential fatty acids, anti-oxidants and nutrients.
At home, products must be very gentle and contain no fragrance (even naturally derived such as essential oils), artificial colouring or abrasive particles. Harsh cleansing is the most common mistake, make sure your cleanser is completely free from sodium laureth sulphate and keep exfoliation to a minimum. Oil based cleansers are best. Avoid the sun as much as possible and keep heating or air conditioning as low as possible. Drink plenty of water and try to eat a diet high in essential fatty acids. (Nuts, seeds, oily fish). Your pharmacist or heath food shop will be able to advise you on your diet and recommend a supplement if necessary.
Lipid Repair Concentrate from my Skin Essentials by Mariga range has been formulated to mimic the skins natural oil and also to encourage better natural oil flow over time with consistent use. See more details about this and all my products here.
It is possible to have skin that presents with all the above symptoms but is not intrinsically dry. This is artifically dry skin and is usually caused by incorrect skincare, medication or artificial climate and a few lifestyle adjustments combined with using the correct products can get you back on track. To obtain a correct diagnosis just book a comprehensive skin analysis in salon or fill out the distance clients consultation form here.
See the video below for recommendations on which products to use and when and how to apply them for immediate comfort and long term symptom management.

‘The Skincare Rules’ is a fantastic resource for every skin type, full of advice that you can implement right now to help get great skin – for life.
Choosing the right Skin Essentials products for you – when to seek advice
Without a doubt, consistently using the correct products for your particular skin type, condition and issues will have a fantastic effect on the quality and appearance of your skin. Of course, using the wrong products for you will have the opposite effect, causing imbalance, inflammation and poor condition.
At Skin Essentials by Mariga, we divide our products into two categories to help you get the best possible results. These categories are universal products and corrective products.
The universal products are super high-quality, skin-supportive everyday products that can be used by everyone to maintain skin health and beauty and to prevent poor condition occurring from everyday influences such as weather. These can be bought and used without consultation, although we are always happy to advise you if you need help.
Our corrective products, on the other hand, are targeted to very specific conditions and issues such as rosacea, acne, pigmentation, and skin that has in any there way broken down, become unresponsive or just plain gets on your nerves! These products must be matched to your skin’s requirements by one of our specialist team in order to achieve the correction you need. While none of our corrective products used incorrectly will cause any damage to your skin, neither will they give the desired result unless used for the right reason and in the right way.
Scroll below the video for a list of our universal and corrective products:
Universal products in the Skin Essentials Range are as follows:
The above products are perfect to create a daily routine in any of the basic skin types of dry or oily (or somewhere in between!) For any additional issues just get in touch with us and we will advise you on the next step.
All other products are specifically targeted for various skin issues and are best used as part of a prescribed programme recommended by one of our specialists.
Next to your skincare products, the most contact your face has with any item is your pillowcase. If you are lucky you have your face pressed into your pillow for up to eight hours a night. That’s one third of your life. Have you ever given any thought to the effect on your skin your pillow choices have? Probably not, right?
I have read a lot of articles and adverts over the last couple of years touting the supposed anti-wrinkle effect of sleeping on a silk pillowcase as opposed to cotton or polyester. I have never been able to find any research supporting these claims, quite the opposite, but I can tell you that treating yourself to a silk pillowcase or two is something I heartily recommend. While it doesn’t appear to have any actual benefits which can be supported by science (yet at least), it does feel lovely on your skin. I even bring one on holidays with me.
Whatever type of pillowcase you choose, it is very important to change it often, even daily if possible, particularly if you suffer from acne or – cardinal sin- don’t cleanse your face before bed. Bacteria and debris can build up very quickly from hair products, perspiration, dust (and whatever your children/pets track in!). Really, do you want to put your lovely, clean, moisturised face on last night’s hairspray, sweat and shed skin cells? Didn’t think so.
Finally, I don’t recommend using fabric conditioner on your pillowcases. The fragrance can be irritant to skin but also it leaves a film on fabric which transfers to your skin, clogging it up and contributing to congestion in the pores.
Bonus! As Skin Essentials products are so readily absorbed by the skin and are non-greasy, they will penetrate into the skin, long before they could be transferred/absorbed by your pillow, saving your sheets and your wallet!
Now, you’re off to change your pillow case, aren’t you? 🙂

I hope you stayed safe and warm during the storms in the last couple of days. It’s definitely winter now!
In trying to look on the bright side, at least winter is the perfect time to deal with any pigmentation issues that have been bothering you, while there is definitely no chance of accidental overdose of sun exposure!
We have two specialised approaches to offer you for pigmentation.
The first is for spot-treating single or multiple brown patches. We use cryotherapy to freeze off the damaged area. The treatment takes just seconds and the patch fades away over the course of a few weeks.
For the first time it is now possible to treat these patches of pigmentation in one fast session with our new Cryotherapy machine.
For more generalised, background pigmentation we use gentle blended acid peels to gradually fade the discolouration to much lighter levels closer to your natural skin tone.
We recommend winter as the best time to book a course of deep-acting peels as there is no chance of accidental UV exposure to undo all the good work. Start now and have the course finished by Christmas! See more on our peels here.
If you have any issues with skin discolouration, let us help you get an even skin tone back this winter.
Call us now on 053 9145981 for more info
Or visit www.skinessentialsbymariga.com
Valid until 21st November.
*Treatments are very fast, from seconds per lesion, consultation must be done prior to first treatment.
The natural vs chemical skincare debate shows no sign of abating with more and more products putting themselves out there are ‘free from’ this chemical and ‘free from’ that chemical and bragging about their ‘natural’ credentials.
I say, ENOUGH already!
First of all, EVERYTHING is a chemical, whether it is naturally occurring or lab-produced. Let’s use the correct terminology. All ingredients commonly used in skincare will with be extracted from a natural (usually plant) source, or synthetically produced in a lab. The word ‘chemical’ is usually used by marketing departments to frighten you into thinking there is something bad in the competitors product and you should choose their ‘natural’ one. Eh, no!!! The word ‘natural’ has no legal definition in the beauty industry and does not indicate the absence of synthetics. Just read the label. Heard of most of those ‘natural’ ingredients? I don’t think so. Also, a truly natural ingredient would go rancid in a few days without some stabilising synthetic ingredients. The horror!!!
Let’s cut to the chase: does it actually make any difference to your skin? Nope, not a bit.
Is Skin Essentials by Mariga a natural or synthetic product? We use both, each ingredient chosen for it’s safety and it’s usefulness to the skin. As it happens, we do use a very high percentage of botanical extracts, (many more than most of the companies that are shouting about how they are ‘free from chemicals’), because they are the best choice in each case, not because your skin can tell the difference. It can’t.
Which brings up another bug bear of mine: why would you market your product on what is DOESN’T contain? Surely you would shout loud and proud about the great ingredients that ARE in your product……..
