Glowing skincare for mums-to-be exclusive pregnancy skincare kit

Pregnancy skincare – the experts advice.

pregnancy skincare kit from skin essentials by mariga wexfordOne of the nicest things about being a skincare professional and having hands-on contact with our lovely clients all day means that we are often the first to hear the happy news that someone is expecting a baby.

Partly this is because newly expectant mums are usually dying to tell someone before it becomes general knowledge and they know there is the seal of the confessional in our treatments rooms!

But also, there is a practical reason and that is because there are some ingredients that you may want to avoid during pregnancy and we need to review your home and professional skincare routines to adapt for changing needs.

(Note: all the following applies to nursing mums as well as during pregnancy). Read on for our expert advice on pregnancy skincare…

Depending on the skincare routine you are on before becoming pregnant, it may be necessary for you to change some of your products.

Skincare containing Vitamin A, Retinol and Salicylic Acid are not recommended for use during pregnancy.

These ingredients are most often found in products aimed at acne control and anti-ageing. In the Skin Essentials by Mariga range the products containing these ingredients are Overnight Repair Cream, Age Slowly Serum, Blemish Control Cream and Salicylic Cleanser.

It is important to note that there is no evidence that using these skincare ingredients is in any way harmful to you or your baby. We do know that the prescription strength versions of these ingredients are not for use during pregnancy so it is just a precaution to avoid them altogether, even in the relatively tiny amounts and different forms present in skincare products.

If you are not sure whether your creams have these ingredients please ask your skincare professional for advice.

Some professional treatments, particularly peels, will contain various acids so you should let your therapist know before treatment if you are pregnant so that she can tailor your treatment accordingly.

Some electrical treatments are also contraindicated but you can still have a lovely, relaxing treatment to help keep your skin nourished and hydrated. At Skin Essentials we have a special nourishing facial perfect for expectant mums and also our treatment couch is fitted with adjustable pregnancy cushions to keep you comfy and supported right through to your due date.

It is not unusual for our clients to schedule an appointment with us a week before their date for some much-needed me-time!

Skincare treatments, skin essentials by Mariga, Wexford

During pregnancy, much of the nourishment that your body receives from your diet can go to your baby so the skin can suffer from lack of nutrients. You can counter this by using products rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.

I particularly recommend my Skin Comfort Oil, Skin Comfort Cream and Hyaluronic+ Moisture Boost Serum for this special time (You can use these on your tummy too).

Some women will experience pigment changes in the skin during pregnancy. These show up as brown patches on the face often referred to as ‘mask of pregnancy’.

This is very much down to genetic predisposition and can’t be prevented, but using a good SPF30 daily will prevent the marks from becoming permanent through UV exposure.

Some women will find that their skin becomes radiant, especially after the first trimester, giving that pregnancy ‘glow’. For others, unfortunately, the opposite can occur and many women experience a recurrence of long-forgotten acne.

As the actives to control breakouts are not suitable for use while pregnant the best that you can do is to keep your skin strong to help reduce the occurrence of spots.

Drink plenty of water and use skincare with nourishing oils as above and add a hyaluronic-acid based serum such as Hyaluronic+ Moisture Boost under your moisturiser to help prevent water loss which can lead to sensitivities and spots.

Getting plenty of sleep helps too (while you still can!)

I have created the Glowing Skin Kit to contain all of the water and oil based nutrients your skin will need to make sure you are a radiant mum-to-be. It is suitable for all skin types, except very oily, and can be used safely throughout pregnancy and during breast-feeding.

It makes a lovely gift for a special someone in your life or a beautiful treat for yourself!

Upgrade your facial and your results with BLD – new to Skin Essentials by Mariga

Biodynamic Lymphatic Drainage facial massage, new to the Skin Essentials Wexford  luxury facial menu. You will love this as much as we do – guaranteed!

cropped-cropped-about-header.jpg

Biodynamic lymphatic drainage is a manual technique employed to assist the natural lymphatic system of the face, neck and chest to flow easily and naturally. This keeps the contours of the face sharper and gives a beautiful, natural, lit- from-within glow to the skin.

Skin Essentials are currently only skincare clinic in Ireland offering biodynamic lymphatic drainage facials. All of our therapists have studied this beautiful modality with international expert educators.

BLD facials work on different levels of the skin, it’s structures, and also on the senses.

The first and most superficial effect is one of surface exfoliation which happens naturally as the skin is warmed and massaged during treatment. The increased circulation resulting from the specialised massage brings nutrients and oxygen to the cells resulting in an increased radiance and that lit from within glow that we are constantly chasing and trying to fake with make up! Finally, and most importantly, the specialised massage techniques combined with the intuitive energy of biodynamic lymphatic massage assists the flow of lymph around the face, draining down through the lymph nodes of the lower face and neck and draining into the terminus of the clavicle area.

The result? A softer, smoother, plumper skin with beautiful radiance, a boosted immune response, sharper facial contours and unbelievable levels of relaxation.

This exclusive treatment can be taken as a stand-alone facial treatment, as part of a series for longer-lasting results, or can be incorporated into any of the skin essentials customised facials.

You can request this treatment modality when booking your customised facial or we may recommended it as part of your treatment once we have examined your skin and determined your needs before your facial.

We love this treatment so much and believe that everybody should experience the results for themselves. We think this is the best luxury facial we have ever offered, so much so that we include it as part of the standard priced facial service – that’s right, an upgraded facial at no extra charge!

While everyone can benefit from BLD massage treatment, at Skin Essentials we particularly love performing this treatment on people who have difficulty sleeping, or who do not relax well in general, as we enjoy hearing your snores during treatment!

Five things to do right now for younger looking skin!

You want brighter, smoother, clearer, healthier, younger looking skin, right?

And you want it to happen quickly and easily too?Antiageing, natural skincare, wexford clinic

Now, you know if you have been to this website before, have read my book or have watched any of my YouTube videos that there is no magic wand.

Great skin comes from doing lots of small things daily, not from fast fixes!

But there are some things that you can do to give your skin a quick boost of radiance in the short term while you wait for long-term results to kick in from your daily routine and clinical treatments. Here are my tips:

  1. Hydrate – Drink plenty of water or herbal tea today to replenish water from the inside to help get rid of dullness.
  2. Home treatment – Use your favourite mask or enzyme treatment for a fast, visible boost of brightness and smoothness. I recommend Enzyme Exfoliator for a brightening boost in just 10 minutes.
  3. Book a facial – Many of our facials can be adapted into an express 30 minute treatment perfect for a skin beauty boost before an event. Book online here.
  4. Sleep – If you have been boring the candle at both ends you KNOW that a good nights sleep will get you looking back to your best. Go to bed at nine o clock tonight – no excuses!
  5. Exercise to get oxygen and nutrients from the blood rushing to the skin to nourish and revitalise from the inside out.

Can we help you with any aspect of your skincare today? Maybe you have a question you would like us to answer? Or a skin issue that you would like to solve?

Get in touch on 053 9145981 or call in to us in our Wexford Town skin clinic. We are located just off Redmond Square, on Selskar Street.

Choosing Skincare Products During Cancer Treatment & Recovery

Skin Essentials by Mariga in Wexford brings you safe, comforting skincare products and treatments to give you comfort and peace of mind throughout your cancer treatment and recovery

A big concern for people first diagnosed with cancer is whether their personal care products are still suitable for use while they are having treatment.

Perfumed products may sensitise your skin now, even if they never have before, and your doctor will often advise you to use unscented products only.

This is excellent advice and I believe that perfume should never appear in a skincare product.

It simply does not belong on the skin. Ever.

The reason that this advice is particularly given to chemo recipients is because the skin will dry out over the course of the treatment and scented products will cause irritation.

Don’t forget, this advice is not just for artificial perfume, plant sourced scents such as essential oils will have the same effect on the skin so avoid aromatherapy products too.*

Should you ditch your anti-ageing facial skincare routine?

Another consideration when choosing skincare products the are safe and suitable to use during treatment is how they work on/in the skin. Anti-ageing or anti-wrinkle products have many active ingredients the stimulate collagen production, cellular renewal and repair mechanisms in the skin.

While this is generally a good thing, during cancer treatment your skin is already under pressure from chemotherapy drugs and the best approach is to give it as little extra as possible to do and let your natural healing systems focus on battling the effects of chemo.

We don’t want to ask an already overloaded system to start processing active anti-ageing ingredients too, there simply won’t be enough energy in the skin cells to do it all.

Using gentle, non-stimulating formulations designed to support and protect skin function is what is needed right now.

What to avoid for now:

skincare products to avoid, oncology skincare, skin essentials by mariga, wexford

  • Anything with acids such as glycolic, lactic, salicylic – These will mostly be found in exfoliators
and cleansers. Some face or body lotions may have them too.
  • Vitamn A/Retinol – While usually a great addition to a skincare routine, many vitamin A derivatives increase cellular turnover and you don’t want that right now.
  • Epidermal Growth Factors (EGF) – Again, usually recommended in anti-ageing, too stimulating during cancer treatment.
  • Anything with perfume or essential oils.
  • Anything with sulphates, a foaming agent usually found in cleansers that can dry out the skin – Use a non-foaming cleansing oil instead.

What to look for:

  • Blended facial oils made with a combination of natural oils that will give a variety of essential fatty acids and ceramides. Look for Vitamin E, roseship seed, argan and olive fruit oils for example.
  • Rich face creams containing hyaluronic acid and natural plant oils (not essential oils, think sesame seed oil, avocado seed oil, pomegranate seed oil). Protecting evaporation of water from the skin is the number one concern here.
  • Body lotions based on oat milk (avena sativa) or calendula extract.
  • Always use an SPF30 during the day.

Serum or Cream?

What are the differences between facial serums and creams and do you really need both?

Serums may seem like they are the latest buzz in skin products but for those who are serious about their skincare, serums have been their secret weapon for years! Indeed when I launched my product range in 2010, the focus was all on corrective serums.

So, what is a serum and how is it different from a cream?

Hydrating cream with Hyaluronic acid

**As Seen On Xpose** €29.00

A serum is a highly concentrated active skincare product that will address a certain concern such as dullness, redness or lines. Sometimes a serum can address several skin issues at once, as many issues have a common cause.

For example, dullness, fine lines and inflammation can all be caused by dehydration, so a single serum addresses all these symptoms by binding water in the skin. See Hyaluronic+ Moisture Boost.

Most serums are water-based to allow deepest possible penetration into the layers of the epidermis, but some are oil-based and intended to work on the surface layers. See Lipid Repair Concentrate.

Serums work deeper and are more active than creams but they do not replace them. Think of serums working at the cellar layers of your epidermis, strengthening skin cell processes and function, while creams can be considered the roof of the structure, protecting everything underneath and adding softness, suppleness and comfort.

For this reason, even though serums do more corrective work, creams must come first in your programme if you can only budget for one or the other. There is no point having a good cellar and no roof!

In a normal skin not requiring any particular correction, I recommend adding a serum from mid to late twenties to keep skin vital and strong. A product such as Essential Nutrient Serum gives skin many of the water soluble minerals. vitamins and anti-oxidants that it needs to stay healthy.

From mid-thirties I recommend switching this out for an anti-ageing serum such as Hydra Collagen Serum to slow down the visible signs of ageing such as fine lines, dullness, loss of firmness and discolouration.

Hydra Collagen Serum €68

If you have any issues to correct such as redness, sensitised skin, flaking, texture issues etc. you will need to have a corrective serum professionally recommended just for you to rebalance your skin before going on to a maintenance product.

Do you have any questions. comments or feedback about serums or other skin products? Just drop in to our Wexford Town clinic, call us on 053 9145981 or email info@skinessentialsbymariga.com and we will be happy to help you get great skin.
