Choosing Skincare Products During Cancer Treatment And Recovery

Skin Essentials by Mariga in Wexford brings you safe, comforting skincare products and treatments to give you comfort and peace of mind throughout your cancer treatment and recovery

A big concern for people first diagnosed with cancer is whether their personal care products are still suitable for use while they are having treatment.

Perfumed products may sensitise your skin now, even if they never have before, and your doctor will often advise you to use unscented products only. This is excellent advice and I believe that perfume should never appear in a skincare product. It simply does not belong on the skin. Ever. The reason that this advice is particularly given to chemo recipients is because the skin will dry out over the course of the treatment and scented products will cause irritation. Don’t forget, this advice is not just for artificial perfume, plant sourced scents such as essential oils will have the same effect on the skin so avoid aromatherapy products too.*

Should you ditch your anti-ageing facial skincare routine?

Another consideration when choosing skincare products the are safe and suitable to use during treatment is how they work on/in the skin. Anti-ageing or anti-wrinkle products have many active ingredients the stimulate collagen production, cellular renewal and repair mechanisms in the skin. While this is generally a good thing, during cancer treatment your skin is already under pressure from chemotherapy drugs and the best approach is to give it as little extra as possible to do and let your natural healing systems focus on battling the effects of chemo. We don’t want to ask an already overloaded system to start processing active anti-ageing ingredients too, there simply won’t be enough energy in the skin cells to do it all. Using gentle, non-stimulating formulations designed to support and protect skin function is what is needed right now.

What to avoid for now:

-Anything with acids such as glycolic, lactic, salicylic. These will mostly be found in exfoliators and cleansers. Some face or body lotions may have them too.

-Vitamn A/Retinol. While usually a great addition to a skincare routine, many vitamin A derivatives increase cellular turnover and you don’t want that right now.

-Epidermal Growth Factors (EGF). Again, usually recommended in anti-ageing, too stimulating during cancer treatment.

-Anything with perfume or essential oils.

-Anything with sulphates, a foaming agent usually found in cleansers that can dry out the skin. Use a non-foaming cleansing oil instead.

What to look for:

-Blended facial oils made with a combination of natural oils that will give a variety of essential fatty acids and ceramides. Look for Vitamin E, roseship seed, argan and olive fruit oils for example.

-Rich face creams containing hyaluronic acid and natural plant oils (not essential oils, think sesame seed oil, avocado seed oil, pomegranate seed oil). Protecting evaporation of water from the skin is the number one concern here.

-Body lotions based on oat milk (avena sativa) or calendula extract.

-Always use an SPF30 during the day.

Three things you must avoid in your skincare

I think everyone that knows me and the Skin Essentials by Mariga philosophy of building great skin by nurturing the epidermis and it’s processes, is aware that we have three absolutes that you must avoid in your skincare:

Perfume, sulphates and essential oils.

The perfume and sulphates are easy enough to understand (perfume irritates skin, sulphates strip moisture) but often people are surprised that I include essential oils in that list – after all aren’t they natural?? (Yes – to plants!)

Find out exactly why the Skin Essentials way says no to essential oils in the video below:

2017: The Year of Ageing Backwards!

2016 was the year of Ageing Slowly here at Skin Essentials, with new launch of products and treatments aimed at preventing and slowing the formation of lines.

FOR 2017, we are bringing you the year of AGEING BACKWARDS, where we will focus on revision of existing signs of ageing such as lines, wrinkles, loosening skin, sun spots, age spots and visible red veins.

This is for you if:

-You are a smart, vibrant, accomplished woman.
-You have friends, family, a career that you love and are proud of.
-You feel the best you ever have in your life inside , confident, positive, happy.
-You like how you look, you don’t want to jump on the fillers/anti-wrinkle injections bandwagon. You just want to look like you, but rested and younger. The keyword here is FRESH, NOT FROZEN!

BUT for some reason your mirror isn’t working. It’s showing you a version of yourself that is starting to show ageing around the eyes, maybe the mouth. Your skin is not as bright or radiant as it was.
This can’t be you. You feel just the same inside as you did at 25!

THIS is the moment you realise it’s time to start ageing backwards.

Our generation is standing up to ageing. Our grandmothers may have had to accept wrinkles as a fact of life before 50 but we are luckier, we can say no, thanks.

This is NOT about wrinkle injections, fillers or any other invasive methods (which, in my opinion make people just look like they’ve had enhancements, smoother but, curiously, never younger, even though that is the goal. Weird).

Thanks to fantastic breakthroughs in research and development in the fields of biochemistry, corneotherapy and skin science, our generation can stand up to ageing AND to surgery. We get to have it all – naturally.

By focusing on the scientifically correct components required to build healthy skin, each individual can be assessed to discover exactly what the weaknesses in your skin barrier / cellular processes are, and a programme of strengthening homecare combined wth non-invasive clinical treatments can be determined.

Use of protocols such as microneedling, LED phototherapy, hyaluronic acid hydroporation and vitamin infusion will show amazing visible, measurable results on concerns such as crows feet, lip lines, uneven texture and loosening skin.

The benign blemishes that come with age such as sun spots, skin tags and visible red veins can be very quickly and easily banished with cryotherapy (cold) and diathermy (heat), often in a single session.

Natural vs Chemical skincare: Mariga’s advice

The natural vs chemical skincare debate shows no sign of abating with more and more products putting themselves out there are ‘free from’ this chemical and ‘free from’ that chemical and bragging about their ‘natural’ credentials.

I say, ENOUGH already!

First of all, EVERYTHING is a chemical, whether it is naturally occurring or lab-produced. Let’s use the correct terminology. All ingredients commonly used in skincare will with be extracted from a natural (usually plant) source, or synthetically produced in a lab. The word ‘chemical’ is usually used by marketing departments to frighten you into thinking there is something bad in the competitors product and you should choose their ‘natural’ one. Eh, no!!! The word ‘natural’ has no legal definition in the beauty industry and does not indicate the absence of synthetics. Just read the label. Heard of most of those ‘natural’ ingredients? I don’t think so. Also, a truly natural ingredient would go rancid in a few days without some stabilising synthetic ingredients. The horror!!!

Let’s cut to the chase: does it actually make any difference to your skin? Nope, not a bit.

Is Skin Essentials by Mariga a natural or synthetic product? We use both, each ingredient chosen for it’s safety and it’s usefulness to the skin. As it happens, we do use a very high percentage of botanical extracts, (many more than most of the companies that are shouting about how they are ‘free from chemicals’), because they are the best choice in each case, not because your skin can tell the difference. It can’t.

Which brings up another bug bear of mine: why would you market your product on what is DOESN’T contain? Surely you would shout loud and proud about the great ingredients that ARE in your product……..
