Free samples of cosmeceutical skincare – what’s the point?

After my last post on cosmeceutical vs cosmetic skincare I had some follow-up questions from you about whether it is best to ask for a free sample of cosmeceutical skincare products before purchase since they are far more active than cosmetic skincare. The rationale behind these questions is that you would like to know the effect on the skin before committing, in case they are “too strong”. (And thank you to the questioners, I love to hear your thoughts and am happy to follow up and clarify anything you need more in-depth information on). Please don’t be concerned about the products being too strong, too active or in any way scary! In skincare terms the word ‘active’ means it has a measurable impact on the health and appearance of the skin structure, not that it is ‘strong’ in any negative sense :)

In any event, samples are of absolutely no use when it comes to corrective skincare (and neither are they free).

Personally, and like many professionals in the skincare business, I have no time for samples. The fact is that in skincare they are useless. In cosmeceutical brands such as my Skin Essentials by Mariga range, what we are doing with the products is correcting a dysfunction in the cellular level of the skin. This can take from 30 to 120 days in some cases to see a visible result on the surface, as the repair begins in the lower levels of the skin, so a sample that you can try for a couple of days is completely useless as a gauge of the efficacy of the product.

This whole issue is one of the reasons that I always recommend buying your skincare from a skincare clinic as opposed to a retail outlet. You will have had your skin professionally analysed and examined so that the product recommendations your therapist makes will be exactly what your skin requires. Sampling to clients feels a bit amateur and more like trial and error or guesswork to those of us who take our skincare very seriously.

Graphic from Skin Essentials by Mariga skincare clinic in Wexford showing how free skincare samples are a rip off

The only effect that making samples available has is to push the price of the product up dramatically, certainly it’s no longer a ‘free’ sample and you have paid for the availability of a promotional item that is useless to you, but good for creating brand awareness for the cosmetic company. Imagine a situation where a company is making, say, 50 sample sachets for every product. They have to be paid for by the company, where do you think the cost is added back? On the full size product of course. These are some of the reasons that we don’t make samples of our product range, and the main reason that we can keep our prices lower than other cosmeceuticals of the same quality.

Sometimes people ask to try a sample in advance in case they are allergic to a product, and this is of course a valid concern that people have. In fact, allergies are very rare and some take days or weeks of exposure to an allergen to manifest. If you are attending a skincare professional they will have a full record of any previous allergies and can patch test your skin prior to purchase. In cases of true allergy you can always return your product for a full refund.

No samples at the beauty counter?
I have also read several opinions recently that the sales assistants are keeping the samples for themselves, and that this is why they are less available than before. This made me smile as it brought me right back 25 years to when I was working for various cosmetic houses in department stores, and if we genuinely didn’t have the relevant sample available customers would often accuse us of hiding them for ourselves!
I can tell you categorically that we didn’t keep the samples. We didn’t have to because we got free full size products for our own use. We did have to watch out for the ‘professional samplers’ who would never have bought a product in a million years, and this is why samples were kept in a drawer behind the counter. It gave the opportunity to say ‘I don’t have any’ when someone came looking for the 100th time! Ah good times 😀

Do you love to sample? Remember the next time you ask for a ‘free sample’ that you have already paid for it when you bought a product. As you have paid for the ones given out to those who never buy. As the saying goes, there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Step by step anti-ageing routines for all ages

Anti-ageing routines for every age: what to use and when.

anti-ageing partner

As SPF is the best tool in your anti-ageing arsenal, it is never too early to start thinking about anti-ageing! Keeping a broad-spectrum SPF30 with UVA+UVB filters as the last step in your daytime skincare routine is your best defence against premature ageing and those that do this from a young age will reap the benefits for decades. Use a good anti-oxidant cleanser, a daily moisturiser with SPF30 and a lightweight but nourishing night cream.

Note: all these recommendations pre-suppose a normal or average skin with no issues other than to keep a healthy skin and slow the visible ageing process. Anyone from dry to balanced to oily will benefit from these anti-ageing routines. If you have other issues to address such as sensitised or reactive skin, rosacea, acne, red veins, medically-compromised etc. we can tailor a corrective programme just for you and phase in a customised anti-ageing programme when your skin is stronger. All products mentioned should be used around the eyes as well as the rest of the face.

Your basic skincare routine if you are under 25 should look like this – remember this is also the basis for every other age skincare routine to build on:

Morning:
Rinse with water and a microfibre cloth
Apply SPF30 Day Cream

Evening:
Cleanser with Skin Comfort Cleansing Oil
Apply Hydrating Cream

In your mid 20’s:
Start adding in a nutrient-rich serum day and night to counter the natural slow down of skin processes and the negative effects of pollution, hectic lifestyles and less-than-perfect food and drink choices. This will be the biggest step in dramatically slowing down the formation of lines and wrinkles in the future. Prevention is always better than cure!

Morning:
Rinse with water and a microfibre cloth
Apply Essential Nutrient Serum
Apply SPF30 Day Cream

Evening:
Cleanser with Skin Comfort Cleansing Oil
Apply Lipid Repair Concentrate 3 times a week, more often if skin is dry
Apply Hydrating Cream
In your early – mid 30’s:
Swap out your basic water-based serum for a more targeted collagen-supporting one. In your 30’s is when collagen production really begins to slow down and manifests later on the skin as lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores and thinning skin. Again, beginning a collagen boosting routine before you think you need it will pay off, as the changes are already happening deep in your skin that will show up in your late 30’s if you don’t target them early. It is a good time to switch to a richer, but still not greasy, night cream unless you have very oily skin.

Morning:
Rinse with water and a microfibre cloth
Apply Hydra Collagen Serum
Apply SPF30 Day Cream

Evening:
Cleanser with Skin Comfort Cleansing Oil
Apply Lipid Repair Concentrate
Apply Hydrating Cream if skin is oily, Skin Comfort Cream instead if skin is normal/dry

IMG_0063
In your late 30’s to early 40’s:
It’s time to add in a vitamin A product to normalise cellular turnover, reduce any lines and further slow the formation of new ones, keep pores clear and minimise pigmentation spots. Vitamin A will keep the surface texture of your skin smooth, fight lines and wrinkles and slow the progress of pigmentation spots.

Morning:
Rinse with water and a microfibre cloth
Apply Hydra Collagen Serum
Apply SPF30 Day Cream

Evening:
Cleanser with Skin Comfort Cleansing Oil
Apply Age Slowly Serum
Apply Lipid Repair Concentrate 3 times a week, more often if skin is dry
Apply Hydrating Cream if skin is oily, Skin Comfort Cream instead if skin is normal/dry
In your mid-late 40’s (women only)
This is time to add in a product to help balance the unwanted effects on the skin caused by declining oestrogen such as lip lines, crepey skin texture and dullness. Our Youth Boost add-in product is simply mixed with your regular cream to take care of these issues seen in peri-menopause and beyond.

Morning:
Rinse with water and a microfibre cloth
Apply Hydra Collagen Serum
Apply SPF30 Day Cream

Evening:
Cleanser with Skin Comfort Cleansing Oil
Apply Age Slowly Serum
Apply Lipid Repair Concentrate 3 times a week, more often if skin is dry
Apply Skin Comfort Cream with added Youth Boost
In your 50’s and beyond:
There should be no need to change your skincare routine any further, the anti-ageing products you are already using will continue to supply all the nutritional benefits your skin needs. As oestrogen and collagen-forming ingredients further decline naturally in the body, your Hydra Collagen Serum and Youth Boost will keep working hard to balance these effects.

Using these products will keep your skin healthy and younger for a lot longer than using non-targeted, non-active, mass-market skincare products. But of course off you have started somewhere in the middle of these age groups, and already had some visible signs of ageing then you will benefit from adding in clinical revision treatments such as bio-therapeutic needling to reverse age damage already visible. Clinical treatments tailored for your skin will also benefit all ages and stages of skin care to even further delay the visible signs of ageing.

Remember, all these recommendations pre-suppose a normal or average skin with no issues other than to keep a healthy skin and slow the visible ageing process.

All products mentioned can be purchased from our online shop or from our Wexford Town skin care clinic.

Keeping it simple – top anti-ageing products and treatments

Mariga’s quick tips for younger skin

Skin Essentials banner image, facial with the words specialists in non-invasive anti-ageing skincare. you. Younger. Naturally

Anti-ageing doesn’t need to be complicated or confusing. It can be hard to figure out the many types of anti-ageing treatment, products and ingredients that we are constantly bombarded with on social media, magazines, tv etc. From snails to stem cells, vampire facials to baby botox, there is a never-ending stream of “the next big thing” in anti-ageing. If you are overwhelmed with choice, bewildered by conflicting advice and unsure of what’s really necessary, this blog is for you. Below I have outlined the basics of sensible, proven anti-ageing treatments and products that are all you will need to see a visible difference in your skin. If non-invasive anti-ageing is your thing (we deal in ‘fresh not frozen’ outcomes) then read on! These are my top 3 in treatments and products for a younger complexion on all skin types.

Prefer your info in video format? Scroll to the bottom :)

Treatments top three:

  1. Microneedling – delay and reverse visible signs of ageing. This is the ultimate non-surgical treatment for giving you a youthful look that is fresh – not frozen. For those who want subtle yet visible revision of lines and laxity. Results are gradual and permanent. Fantastic also as a time-delay treatments for pre-ageing clients.
  2. LED light therapy. Powerful, natural, non-invasive and customisable. Stimulates collagen, gives a revitalised softness and glow back to your skin. Add-on to your facial to supercharge results or have a course for a deep skin re-boot on skin that has been neglected or over-exposed to the sun. I have been using LED therapy on my clients for over ten years now and it shows in their skin!
  3. Facial Massage. This old-school treatment will always have a place in our customised facials. A targeted, personalised facial massage is far more than just rubbing lotions into your skin. In the right hands it is a stand-alone anti-ageing tool that increases the availability of nutrition to the skin cells, stimulates lymph flow for sharper contours, releases muscle tension from the face, eyes and shoulders. Our therapists are trained in many types of massage so that we can tailor the best one for you. Examples are sculpting and lifting massage to give a more wide-awake and fresh look to the face and eyes, lymphatic drainage to reduce puffiness or pressure point manipulation to relieve tension. And of course whatever method we choose for your facial, it’s blissful to receive!

Products top three:

  1. Gentle cleanser and SPF30 moisturiser are your basic core products in any skincare routine. Without a thorough, yet gentle, cleanse, your following products will not work to their full effectiveness. And, of course, we all know that prevention is better than cure, so SPF30 daily moisturiser is a must-have. From the Skin Essentials range look for Skin Comfort Cleanser and SPF30 Day Cream.
  2. Serum. If you have not yet started using serum then it is time to make the change! Well-formulated serums can deliver targeted actives much deeper than your treatment cream and deliver visible results over time. There are serums for all ages and skin requirements but from an anti-ageing point of view the number one ingredient to use is Vitamin A, the global gold-standard in effective anti-ageing. This ingredient is vital for skin health and function and will keep cellular turnover at optimum levels, giving you brighter, clearer skin with less congestion, diminished lines and a more even colour and texture. Choose the correct serum for your skin type then add a vitamin A serum at night for anti-ageing power on every skin type. From the Skin Essentials range look at Age Slowly Serum.
  3. Treatment Cream. Far more than a ‘moisturiser’, your chosen cream should supply nutrition, hydration and anti-oxidants at a minimum, then ideally you should be able to choose one that also has active ingredients for your skin’s particular needs. Ingredients to look out for: hyaluronic acid, plant butters, seed oils. Try to use creams that do not have silicone in the first few ingredients on the label as a general rule. For example: our Skin Comfort Cream is a fantastic universal cream for normal-dry skin types that will also provide multi-anti-oxidants, plant sterols to deeply moisturise and calm redness, all facilitating an environment where skin cells can function to their capacity, giving you a much slower ageing

NEW – The Perfector. A complete facial treatment for skin rejuvenation, red veins and milia.

I am SUPER excited to let you know about The Perfector – my latest treatment created with busy people like you in mind.

The only treatment of it’s kind available in Ireland

For the first time it is possible to have your anti-ageing skin treatment in combination with diathermy removal of red veins and milia. This is a truly complete facial that targets ALL of your skin issues in a single visit to Skin Essentials.

Merging three essential anti-ageing and complexion correction elements together for the first time, this treatment is exclusive to Skin Essentials, you will not find a similar treatment anywhere else in Ireland!

So many of you want to have facials for skin maintenance, brightening, breakouts or anti-ageing. BUT you also have an annoying visible red vein or two (or twenty, good old Irish weather), on your cheeks or perhaps some milia bumps around your eyes or those little skin tags on your neck or chest.

Well now you don’t have to decide which treatment you will have in your precious free time, The Perfector Facial gives you both.

In one 80 minute session, your skin will be deep cleansed, infused with a customised cocktail of vitamins and minerals, any clogged pores or blackheads extracted, milia and red veins treated with diathermy on face neck and chest, followed by a soothing mask treatment and finally 30 minutes of LED photo-modulation therapy customised to your needs, whether that is anti-ageing, anti-acne or anti-inflammatory. Phew!

This is a treatment that so many of us could use once a year or so (after a certain age!) to deal with the visible capillaries and other skin anomalies that are the result of sun exposure over the years, and just living life! We all get them, now you know the secret to getting rid of them :)

Particularly if you travel a long distance to see us here at Skin Essentias, I know this will be a great addition to your clinical routine, and save two separate trips for separate diathermy and facials

This treatment is currently only performed by myself, so appointments are limited and available Thursday – Saturday weekly. The cost per treatment is €150. Advance booking is recommended as I do get booked up quite far ahead!

Mariga :)

Call 053 9145981 to schedule your appointment or book online here
Note: During The Perfector treatment, I will be able to remove an average of 20 small lesions such as red veins, milia and spider naevi. If you have dozens of lesions that need treatment you will need to schedule a follow up session.

Lactic Acid Peel Demo

Acid peels – not as scary as they sound. When you have an acid peel with us, you will always have a progressive, not aggressive, peel. Many people think that acid peels are serious treatments requiring days of hiding out while you skin sheds, like the famous scene from Sex And The City where Samantha has the sever, raw looking skin after a peel.

Those types of peel do indeed exist, but they are chemical peels performed by a doctor only. Peels of that depth, using ingredients such as phenol or TCA, are for major resurfacing on people who have scarring or want a non-surgical alternative to a facelift for deep wrinkling. In fact, some require anaesthesia and have weeks of downtime!

When dealing with the epidermis (upper skin layers) as in a salon or skin clinic setting, we are taking about acids such as lactic, salicylic, mandolin or glycolic, most of which are naturally derived and work WITH the skin, not against it. These type of peels are best employed in a series of three or more to gradually get your skin where you want it to be in a gentle manner, rather than aggressively. See the video below for a demo and lots of details about the different acids and what they are used for.

Your virtual personal skin guru, wherever you are!

Do you read blogs, magazines and watch videos from people reviewing and talking about their amazing facialist or skin guru?

Do you wish that you had access to a skin expert near where you live?

Don’t worry, we are here for you!

When we launched the Skin Essentials by Mariga skincare philosophy and products in Wexford in 2010, one of the most common reactions we got was “It’s so great to have this quality of skincare advice available in Wexford, everything seems to be usually only available in Dublin.” It was, and still is, quite novel to have clients travelling from Dublin, and all over the country, to Wexford for skin advice, rather than the other way around!

It soon became apparent that there was a demand for this level of quality skin assessment service in every corner of the country, we were getting so many questions about whether we were planning to open anywhere else, did we travel around the country hosting events or had we plans to sell our products through other outlets. We already had the Skin Essentials range of products available to buy one through our webshop, but people wanted personalised advice and support to go with them, just like our local clients and those able to travel to Wexford were getting.

It became obvious that the next step was to develop a way to offer consultations and advice to those who couldn’t get to our clinic in Wexford and in 2011 the Distance Assessment Programme was launched, a first in Ireland and the UK.
The Distance Assessment programme is a virtual consultation that we undertake with you in order to learn all about your skin and offer personal recommendations and support. Read details of how it works here.

Even now, seven years later, we remain the only skincare facility in the country offering Advanced Skin Analysis consultations using the international gold standard qualification of Pastiche Skin Analysis, the system learned and used by the best skin experts worldwide, and we still have clients travelling from every corner of Ireland for our consultations, advice, products and treatments.

Our online assessments have been taken by hundreds of happy clients and it continues to be a very in-demand service. Read testimonials here.

Can’t get to Wexford for a consultation with one of our renowned skin consultants? We can get to you “virtually’ anywhere!

Safety in the salon – the cost of cheap beauty treatments

Are You Safe In The Salon?

I’ve said it before and I will keep saying it:

Cheap treatments are cheap for a reason.

Where reputable professionals are offering a quality service they first have invested heavily in staff education, such as advanced learning in the theory of skin science, anatomy and physiology, product ingredients and their effects, cosmetic chemistry to name a few.
Then each treatment offered has been heavily researched and specific theoretical and practical training undertaken for each protocol. (At Skin Essentials by Mariga we undertake independent industry recognised training for each new machine/treatment before we do manufacturers training).
Reputable salons and clinics will use only high-grade products sourced from a reliable supplier, never cheap bulk products from unregulated internet sites.
All good professionals will have the appropriate insurances for each treatment. As far as possible disposable materials and tools will be used and a complete set of new disposable instruments/hygiene products are used for each client. Appointments are spaced out such that there is time to sanitise each workroom between clients.
All of this costs money, and often represents the difference between a cheap treatment and a standard priced one.img_1287
Please, don’t put your health at risk for a discount.

As to industry regulation, it is a regrettable fact that regulation is poor at the moment, and under-enforced, but there are great professionals out there that take pride in their work and are trying to raise standards for everybody. There is a European Committee currently convened to produce a document outlining guidelines for standardising the provision of beauty services across thirty three participating countries in Europe. I am proud to be an Irish delegate to  this committee and to confirm that there is an appetite for change within the industry.

The choice, as always, is with the consumer but please be sure that you are fully informed before you choose a service provider.
There is no problem with asking your skincare professional/waxer/nail tech about their qualifications, insurance and continuous professional development. Those that have pride in their work will be delighted to tell you all about their qualifications and expertise.
Please share this article to help keep everyone safe in the salon.
