Serum or Cream?

What are the differences between facial serums and creams and do you really need both?

Serums may seem like they are the latest buzz in skin products but for those who are serious about their skincare, serums have been their secret weapon for years! Indeed when I launched my product range in 2010 the focus was all on corrective serums.

So, what is a serum and how is it different from a cream?

Hydrating cream with Hyaluronic acid

A serum is a highly concentrated active skincare product that will address a certain concern such as dullness, redness or lines. Sometimes a serum can address several skin issues at once, as many issues have a common cause. For example, dullness, fine lines and inflammation can all be caused by dehydration so a single serum addresses all these symptoms by binding water in the skin. See Hyaluronic+ Moisture Boost.

Most serums are water-based to allow deepest possible penetration into the layers of the epidermis but some are oil-based and intended to work on the surface layers. See Lipid Repair Concentrate.

Serums work deeper and are more active than creams but they do not replace them. Think of serums working at the foundation layers of your epidermis, strengthening skin cell processes and function, while creams can be considered the roof of the structure, protecting everything underneath and adding softness, suppleness and comfort. For this reason, even though serums do more corrective work, creams must come first in your programme if you can only budget for one or the other. There is no point having a good floor and no roof!

In a normal skin not requiring any particular correction, I recommend adding a serum from mid to late twenties to keep skin vital and strong. A product such as Essential Nutrient Serum gives skin many of the water soluble minerals vitamins and anti-oxidants that it needs to stay healthy. From mid-thirties I recommend switching this out for an anti-ageing serum such as Hydra Collagen Serum to slow down the visible signs of ageing such as fine lines, dullness, loss of firmness and discolouration.

If you have any issues to correct such as redness, sensitised skin, flaking, texture issues etc. you will need to have a corrective serum professionally recommended just for you to rebalance your skin before going on to a maintenance product.

Five common skincare mistakes to avoid

There are some skincare mistakes that we all have made at some point in time!

Often this is out of a misguided sense of ‘more is better’ or because of persistent beauty myths that abound on the internet. (Don’t even get me started on the coconut oil fixes everything craze). Maybe you are trying something that is working for a friend and can’t understand why you are not getting the same results? Or you had a facial and don’t understand why it didn’t fix your skin? Below is my list of common skincare mistakes to avoid. Have you made these skin mistakes?

  1. Over Cleansing – gentle cleansing every night is enough. Over stripping will cause water/oil imbalance and lead to inflammation
  2. Over exfoliation – your skin is not a floor, don’t scrub it.
  3. Not giving a new product/treatment time to work – skin takes time to get into a state of disrepair, it will take time to rebalance it too. There is no magic wand!
  4. SPF is not just for summer – light, not just heat, damages you skin leading to premature ageing at the least. Use it 365!
  5. Guessing your skin type – no no no! Have your skin professionally analysed to make sure you are getting it right from the start and avoid adding to skin damage by using an inappropriate product for you.

Not sure whether you are making skin mistakes? Drop in to our skin clinic in Selskar, Wexford or call us on 053 9145981 to talk to one of our expert skin therapists who will be happy to advise you and get to started on the path to great skin.

Good-better-best: a budget-conscious approach to buying your home skincare

Good-better-best: a budget-conscious approach to buying your home skin care.

In skincare, as in so many other areas of life, it is true that nothing is better than the wrong thing. Bearing that in mind, let’s look at best skincare practice on a budget.
From time to time, many of us have to cut back in this or that area of our spending as life happens! How do you approach reducing your skincare spend if the budget just isn’t there this month? If you are using six different skincare products in your routine do you buy six cheaper versions or cut out a few from your routine?
The answer: it’s better to use nothing than the wrong thing! So in this instance you are far better off dropping some items than replacing them with cheaper, possibly skin-damaging options. Below I have outlined a three tiered option for every budget. Simply make sure that you have the correct products for your skin from option one, then add the others if and when budget allows. (Or drop hints to your nearest and dearest for birthdays, Christmas etc.)!

Here are the basics of a good budget routine for skin protection:
Gentle, fragrance free cleanser and make up remover in one.
Daytime moisturiser containing SPF, skin-conditioning ingredients, vitamins and anti-oxidants.
Night time facial oil to condition and add essentials fatty acids and anti-oxidants to the skin. Note: this MUST be a blended oil, specifically for face, single straight oils will not work to your skin’s benefit in the long run. See our Lipid Repair Concentrate or Skin Comfort Oil for examples.

To make this routine even better add:
A morning treatment serum to address and correct any current problems with your skin such as inflammation, redness or dullness. (we can advise you on the best for your particular skin needs).

If and when budget allows, you can make this routine the best possible by adding some serious anti-ageing in the form of a Vitamin A serum or cream for night.

What price great skin?

How much should you be paying for you skincare products?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Skincare-Rules-have-great-skin-ebook/dp/B01CAHUSS4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1456916675&sr=8-1&keywords=mariga+sheedy
That depends on what you want a product to do. The more active a product, likely the more expensive the ingredients are.

Paying big money for your skincare is no guarantee of quality. That said, you won’t get quality formulas and active ingredients cheaply, so from that we can we infer that a cheap product is not doing any good? It all depends on ingredients:

Ingredients in a skincare formulation can be active or inactive. (Occasionally both).
Active ingredients are those which can change, correct or support cell function deep in the epidermis.
Inactive ingredients can change only the surface appearance.

Usually, active ingredients are expensive as they have undergone years of research and development. Any formula that claims to change how skin cells act such as anti-wrinkle, acne clearing or rosacea control needs to have active ingredients to work. Therefore they will be more expensive than inactive formulas.
Inactive ingredients are things like inert (not essential) natural oils, silicones, glycerine, mineral oil or other conditioning agents that give that nice feeling of slip under makeup and usually serve to retain moisture in the skin. There is nothing wrong with using inactive formulations as long as you are aware that they can’t change anything in your skin and are just washed off every evening. Do not expect to pay so much for these types of products.

Irritating ingredients like sulphate, synthetic fragrance and artificial colours cost pennies per gallon and appear in most mass market skincare, even the most expensive. Beware of these as they will irritate and age your skin at its deepest level.

Whether you choose products with high levels of active ingredients really depends on your needs and your budget. Just don’t part with your money for something that looks/sounds/smells good until you know what it can and can’t do for your skin.

All Skin Essentials by Mariga products contain the maximum actives for results in each formulation so all our active serums and creams do exactly what they claim.

Cold Weather Skin Saving Tips

Mariga’s advice on how to keep your skin in great condition as we move into winter.

cropped-cryo-intro.jpg

As we transition from one season to the next sometimes our skincare routine no longer seems to ‘fit’ just right. Read on for Mariga’s tip on avoiding flaky, irritated, sensitive winter skin:
There can be many reasons for this including:

-central heating drying the air which causes faster evaporation of water from our skin.
-moving between hot and cold spaces causing rapid constriction/dilation of tiny blood vessels, causing problems ranging from flushing to more permanent redness over time.
-weather: being outside in the cold and wind can cause texture damage resulting in roughness and flaking.

What to do at home:
-If your skin begins to feel dry or tight you can introduce a facial oil for protection and comfort. All Skin Essentials facial oils can be used under your SPF30 day cream or used alone or under  Skin Comfort Cream at night. (If you have been using  Hydrating Cream, consider Skin Comfort Cream instead for the winter, it is a richer version with added plant sterols and anti-oxidants to deep skin moisture and repair). If you have a lot of repair to do, our Winter Skin Kit combines our deep relief moisturiser with our high strength hyaluronic acid and peptide serum to progressively repair and strengthen damaged, dehydrated or fragile skin.
-Use a humidifier to combat the effects of dry air or keep bowls of water near direct heat sources.
-It can seem harder in winter, but make sure to keep up your fluid intake to hydrate your skin from the inside. If cold water is beyond you, herbal teas are a great alternative (choose naturally caffeine-free).
-If suitable for you, essential fatty acid supplements will protect skin cells from the inside.

Clinical solutions:
Ideally you should have your skincare routine reassessed seasonally to make sure you are doing the best you can for your skin at every time of the year. Booking in for a progress review to have your skin examined in-depth and your skincare needs reassessed is a good idea. If your skin has become a bit sluggish or lost radiance after a summer of sun exposure now is the time to book your facial treatment to keep your skin systems stimulated and balanced. And, it’s a lovely treat! (Have you tried our Barrier Repair Facial? It’s divine. Call us on 053 9145981 to book your 30 or 60 minute version now. You’ll be glad you did.)

TERRIBLE skincare advice! Steer clear of ALL these “tips”!

I’ve just read an article on a popular Irish beauty and lifestyle website that has made my blood BOIL!

Mariga -

On a popular Irish website, an article was published yesterday that gave the WORST skincare advice. The fact that it is a very well read and followed website just makes it even worse. Wouldn’t you think that a professional website would have an editor of some sort looking out for the quality of the articles presented to their loyal following? Now, I know you can’t expect an editor to be expert in all subjects, so perhaps a beauty editor that has a clue would have helped here. To me, a qualified skincare professional and safety advocate, it reads like a (very bad) joke. Every single piece of “advice” on this DREADFUL SKINCARE ARTICLE is actually directly damaging to the skin. (LINK HERE IF YOU WANT TO READ IT)

If you don’t want to waste your time reading it (see link above), here are the high (low?) points: Continue reading
