Is your phone damaging your skin?

Tips for neutralising blue light damage in your skin.

Skin Essentials Wexford skin clinic anti-ageing blue light graphic with phone, iPad and text is your computer ageing your skin, don't worry we can help

Did you know? We have a new source of free-radical skin damage to worry about now!
Blue light from your computer/mobile devices can have a negative impact on your skin. A recent report claims that four days computer time is the equivalent of twenty minutes exposure to the midday sun and that blue light goes deeper than UVA/UVB rays, accelerating oxidisation and damaging the vital skin barrier.

But don’t worry, you don’t have to bin your phone, just incorporate some simple tips to minimise the impact on your skin. For many of you, especially if you are already a Skin Essentials client, you will already be doing this so no change will be needed!

What is free-radical damage anyway?
Also known as oxidisation, free radical damage occurs when the skin is exposed to more biologically-stressing factors than it can effectively cope with. Our skin comes with naturally-occurring, in-built anti-oxidant capability but this can be easily overwhelmed in today’s world where almost everything we do, eat and apply adds to the oxidative stress load. Also, as we get older, these natural defence components of the skin reduce in concentration, meaning the older you are, the faster your skin will show damage from your environment. Yikes!

Of course, we have lots of help on hand for you in the form of topically-applied anti-oxidants that will offer immediate repair and also build long term strength to aid your skin cells in fighting the accelerated signs of ageing caused by free-radical damage.

Simply apply the advice below to drastically reduce the impact of blue light and other oxidants on your complexion.

1. Using a daily sunscreen with UVA/UVB filter and added anti-oxidants will protect you from blue light as well as sunlight. Another reason to make your daily SPF a last step in your skincare routine 365 days a year! Our daily SPF30 advanced protection cream will give you great protection while also supplying anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals.

2. Great ingredients in your skincare for repair are Vitamins C,A & E, green tea extract, dismutase super-oxide, niacin amide, ceramides, plant sterols. There are many, many anti-oxidants and the best approach is just like with your diet – get a variety for optimum skin health.

3. If you are over 35 your collagen will be breaking down faster then before so it is time to add a powerful serum full of ingredients targeted at helping the fibroblasts in your skin make and maintain good quality collagen for many years to come. Our Hydra Collagen Serum, used under your SPF, gives you added anti-ageing, anti-pollution, anti-oxidant, hydrating and collagen building goodness. No wonder it’s our best-selling serum!

4. Your skin also needs oil-soluble anti-oxidants to repair free radical damage in the vital lipid layers of the skin. Lipid Repair Concentrate is our stand-out facial oil formulated to repair and rebuild stressed, damaged and compromised skin. Use morning (dry skin) or at night (normal/oily skin) after your water based serum for complete skin repair.

5. Get anti-oxidants from the inside too. Help your skin to produce natural anti-oxidants. Eat a varied diet rich in omegas, fruit and vegetables. Keep hydrated.

6. It may seem obvious, but minimise exposure to blue light, direct sunlight and pollution where possible and protect well where it is unavoidable.

7. Avoid ingredients that can irritate your skin, causing a greater stress load on your cells. Worst offenders are perfume, sulphates and essential oils.

8. Make sure that your professional treatments are addressing your anti-oxidant needs. Tell your skin therapist if you spend a lot of time in front of your computer. The Skin Essentials Barrier Repair Facial is a great monthly facial to help reduce oxidative stress as well as the deeper lipid peroxidation that is the secondary stage of oxidative damage, and of course it offers barrier repair. All this and it’s very relaxing too.

I hope you find these tips helpful. Remember, at Skin Essentials by Mariga we are always researching and innovating to ensure that you have the most up-to-date information as well as practical solutions for all skin issues you might encounter, even ones you haven’t heard of yet!

Lactic Acid Peel Demo

Acid peels – not as scary as they sound. When you have an acid peel with us, you will always have a progressive, not aggressive, peel. Many people think that acid peels are serious treatments requiring days of hiding out while you skin sheds, like the famous scene from Sex And The City where Samantha has the sever, raw looking skin after a peel.

Those types of peel do indeed exist, but they are chemical peels performed by a doctor only. Peels of that depth, using ingredients such as phenol or TCA, are for major resurfacing on people who have scarring or want a non-surgical alternative to a facelift for deep wrinkling. In fact, some require anaesthesia and have weeks of downtime!

When dealing with the epidermis (upper skin layers) as in a salon or skin clinic setting, we are taking about acids such as lactic, salicylic, mandolin or glycolic, most of which are naturally derived and work WITH the skin, not against it. These type of peels are best employed in a series of three or more to gradually get your skin where you want it to be in a gentle manner, rather than aggressively. See the video below for a demo and lots of details about the different acids and what they are used for.

Prevention is better than cure – how to delay the visible ageing process

Happy with your skin right now? Let us help you keep it that way. Prevention is always better than cure.

I know I talk a lot about anti-ageing and how to reduce the visible signs of ageing on your face, particularly lines, wrinkles and sun spots. It is a subject very personal to me as I recently turned 45, a scary age!

But, I know there are a lot of you who are not yet at that stage and want to know how to start early to slow the onset of visible ageing as much as possible, so this post is for you.

First of all, you need to know your skin’s potential for ageing. How have past lifestyle factors influenced the way you might age? What is your genetic indication (not as important as you might think but still a helpful metric to measure)? How is your health? The answers to these questions along with many others, together with a physical skin examination, make up the basis of our skin analysis and this can be done in person or online. All of this information will give us powerful information from which to build your personal ageing profile and customise an anti-ageing profile for you.

Not there yet? Just need general advice about age prevention? No problem, there are lots of tips that are common to every skin type and issue. Here are some of my top Age Slowly tips:

-Use SPF30 daily and layer an anti-oxidant serum under it for extra Age Slowly power. I recommend Essential Nutrient Serum if you are under 30.
-Cleanse your skin gently every night whether you wear makeup or not. Never, ever scrub your skin.
-Moderate sugar, dairy and added salt in your diet. The less the better. Drink water, eat fruit and veg of all colours.
-Have facials as often as you can afford them, monthly if possible. Only go to the best, most reputable salon or clinic. Not near one? Having no treatment is better than having a bad – or inappropriate for you- treatment. Just up your homecare game with masks (weekly) and enzyme-based exfoliators (monthly).
-Stay out of direct sunlight as much as humanly possible, whatever the temperature.

At the salon:

-The best professional treatments to have for cellular age prevention are restorative treatments that use a lot of infusions, massage and bio-identical oils. As always, strictly no products containing perfumes, essential oils or sulphates should EVER touch your skin.

-Regular facials make a huge difference in your long-term skin health and appearance. Aim to have one at least every three months, if time and budget allow then monthly is even better. At Skin Essentials we customise your facial every time and facials can include modalities including ion+ therapy to deeply infuse active ingredients, lymphatic drainage massage to give your skin a lit-from-within glow while eliminating stagnation and puffiness, high frequency to purify breakout-prone skin or ultrasonic exfoliation to name a few. Facials should NEVER be cookie-cutter, one-size -fits-all.

LED light therapy is great for all skin types, my personal recommendation for amazing results. Use alone or add to any other treatment.

-For a more heavy-duty approach, starting clinical microneedling at the very first sign of fine lines will give you ‘collagen in the bank’ for future years. If you start in time, one or two single sessions of needling a year will stave off lines for a long time (provided of course that you are good with all other aspects of your skincare too, nothing will save you if you use sunbeds and sleep in your makeup)!

-Avoid all forms of mechanical exfoliation such as microdermabrasion. These will thin your skin and contribute to premature ageing. Peels are useful but only when used by a very competent therapist and for the right reasons, with the right ingredients for YOUR skin.

Is your skin suffering from January syndrome?

Have you spent January being (mostly) healthy? Have you eaten well, exercised a bit and kept a consistent skincare routine? If you have, well done and I hope you are getting the benefits in increased energy and glowing skin!

Or are you one of those superhuman people that have actually stuck rigidly to a January ‘detox’? If so, your skin may be suffering from what we here at Skin Essentials by Mariga call January Syndrome! This is where you feel like you are doing all the right things for your body and skin but you still end up with a dull, dry complexion. The major culprit for this is fat, lack of good fats in your diet will impact skin negatively and after a few weeks you will notice that your skin feels rougher, looks less radiant, maybe even downright dull or ashy, and it can feel dry with an increase in noticeable fine lines.

Good fats are needed in your body for your skin cells to be properly formed, healthy and intact. Without these you are producing poor quality keratin cells that will not function properly to keep water in your skin and to keep environmental irritants out, resulting in the conditions described above.

Lipid Repair Concentrate from Skin Essentials by Mariga will help restore your skin to its radiant, healthy, strong best.

Lipid Repair Concentrate – restore healthy, radiant skin.

The good news is that this can be corrected as long as you haven’t let it go too far! People who follow a long-term fat free or very low fat diet will have prematurely aged skin that is difficult to restore to its former appearance. But if you have just started noticing it then it will be simple enough to reverse with correct skincare, barrier repair treatments where necessary and definitely a re-introduction of good fats in your diet. (The favourites from a skin point of view are avocados, salmon, nuts and seeds).

The most important consideration in your skincare routine to correct this issue is a high quality, bio-balanced facial oil that gives your skin the exact percentage of each type of lipid it requires to rebuild and restore strength, smooth uneven texture and give you back your glow. We recommend using Lipid Repair Concentrate morning and evening under your regular cream until your skin is showing signs of recovery and then reducing to once per day for maintenance.

To quick-start your skin recovery book in for a Barrier Repair Facial. This is available in a 30 or 60 minute version and is absolutely divine as well as delivering results. Definitely one to treat yourself to, especially if you have been good for the month of January!

Good-better-best: a budget-conscious approach to buying your home skincare

Good-better-best: a budget-conscious approach to buying your home skin care.

In skincare, as in so many other areas of life, it is true that nothing is better than the wrong thing. Bearing that in mind, let’s look at best skincare practice on a budget.
From time to time, many of us have to cut back in this or that area of our spending as life happens! How do you approach reducing your skincare spend if the budget just isn’t there this month? If you are using six different skincare products in your routine do you buy six cheaper versions or cut out a few from your routine?
The answer: it’s better to use nothing than the wrong thing! So in this instance you are far better off dropping some items than replacing them with cheaper, possibly skin-damaging options. Below I have outlined a three tiered option for every budget. Simply make sure that you have the correct products for your skin from option one, then add the others if and when budget allows. (Or drop hints to your nearest and dearest for birthdays, Christmas etc.)!

Here are the basics of a good budget routine for skin protection:
Gentle, fragrance free cleanser and make up remover in one.
Daytime moisturiser containing SPF, skin-conditioning ingredients, vitamins and anti-oxidants.
Night time facial oil to condition and add essentials fatty acids and anti-oxidants to the skin. Note: this MUST be a blended oil, specifically for face, single straight oils will not work to your skin’s benefit in the long run. See our Lipid Repair Concentrate or Skin Comfort Oil for examples.

To make this routine even better add:
A morning treatment serum to address and correct any current problems with your skin such as inflammation, redness or dullness. (we can advise you on the best for your particular skin needs).

If and when budget allows, you can make this routine the best possible by adding some serious anti-ageing in the form of a Vitamin A serum or cream for night.

Find the best products to build your homecare routine whatever your budget in our web shop here:
Remember, all Skin Essentials by Mariga products are highly concentrated and high-performance, assuring you of great value for money whatever your budget. If you would like one of our highly experienced skin therapists to help choose a personalised routine for you just email us at our Wexford clinic info@skinessentialsbymariga.com or call 053 9145981and we can work together to get you the best possible solutions in your budget.

Of course, there are lots of other budget-friendly tips and lifestyle changes that you can make to help keep your skin in great condition. See the first in Mariga’s free skincare tips below, and find lots more on our Skin Essentials by Mariga YouTube channel.

Safety in the salon – the cost of cheap beauty treatments

Are You Safe In The Salon?

I’ve said it before and I will keep saying it:

Cheap treatments are cheap for a reason.

Where reputable professionals are offering a quality service they first have invested heavily in staff education, such as advanced learning in the theory of skin science, anatomy and physiology, product ingredients and their effects, cosmetic chemistry to name a few.
Then each treatment offered has been heavily researched and specific theoretical and practical training undertaken for each protocol. (At Skin Essentials by Mariga we undertake independent industry recognised training for each new machine/treatment before we do manufacturers training).
Reputable salons and clinics will use only high-grade products sourced from a reliable supplier, never cheap bulk products from unregulated internet sites.
All good professionals will have the appropriate insurances for each treatment. As far as possible disposable materials and tools will be used and a complete set of new disposable instruments/hygiene products are used for each client. Appointments are spaced out such that there is time to sanitise each workroom between clients.
All of this costs money, and often represents the difference between a cheap treatment and a standard priced one.img_1287
Please, don’t put your health at risk for a discount.

As to industry regulation, it is a regrettable fact that regulation is poor at the moment, and under-enforced, but there are great professionals out there that take pride in their work and are trying to raise standards for everybody. There is a European Committee currently convened to produce a document outlining guidelines for standardising the provision of beauty services across thirty three participating countries in Europe. I am proud to be an Irish delegate to  this committee and to confirm that there is an appetite for change within the industry.

The choice, as always, is with the consumer but please be sure that you are fully informed before you choose a service provider.
There is no problem with asking your skincare professional/waxer/nail tech about their qualifications, insurance and continuous professional development. Those that have pride in their work will be delighted to tell you all about their qualifications and expertise.
Please share this article to help keep everyone safe in the salon.
