Anti-ageing – it’s not all about wrinkles

Often when we think about anti-ageing or Ageing Slowly as we call it at Skin Essentials, the focus is on wrinkles, whether reversing the appearance and depth of ones already there or preventing them in the first place.

But there is so much more to anti-ageing than wrinkle management!

I would even go so far as to say that lines and wrinkles are not the most visibly ageing factor I see on skin.

Here are my top three ‘stealth-agers’ that you need to know about:

  • If I had to choose (not that I want to) between eradicating lines or eradicating dullness I would opt for the second choice every time.

Clinical vs Home Microneedling

It won’t come as a surprise to know that microneedling is my favourite anti-ageing treatment as I talk about it so much here on the blog and across all my social media channels!

The reason that I recommend it so highly is because it is natural, it works on all skin types and it can be used at any age and stage of ageing to prevent, and reduce, lines, wrinkles, loosening skin and all general visible signs of ageing.

I always advise my needling clients to use a home roller along with their clinical treatments. The two are very different and are used for separate but complimentary outcomes.

Clinical needling is deeper (up to 1mm) and has some downtime of redness associated with it, usually 1-2 days. It is used to deeply stimulate skin structures, notably fibroblasts, to increase their output and act like younger cells. We focus on the correct depths to increase collagen production which in turn and over time tightens, brightens and firms the skin.

Home needling is a much shallower treatment, .25-.3mm maximum. This depth affects only the top layer of the epidermis and allows for deeper penetration of your products for maximum absorption and results from your recommended homecare routine. It also acts like a ‘reminder’ to the fibroblasts of the clinical treatments and furthers collagen production started in the treatment room. Twice a week at home is great and it takes just 5 minutes. Ideally, use our Hyaluronic+ Moisture Boost Serum with your home roller for a hydration boost. And remember, always buy your rollers from a reputable source! (We sell them here). Cheap online versions of anything are generally cheap for a reason. Never compromise with your skin, it has to last you a lifetime.

Step by step anti-ageing routines for all ages

Anti-ageing routines for every age: what to use and when.

As SPF is the best tool in your anti-ageing arsenal, it is never too early to start thinking about anti-ageing! Keeping a broad-spectrum SPF30 with UVA+UVB filters as the last step in your daytime skincare routine is your best defence against premature ageing and those that do this from a young age will reap the benefits for decades. Use a good anti-oxidant cleanser, a daily moisturiser with SPF30 and a lightweight but nourishing night cream.

Note: all these recommendations pre-suppose a normal or average skin with no issues other than to keep a healthy skin and slow the visible ageing process. Anyone from dry to balanced to oily will benefit from these anti-ageing routines. If you have other issues to address such as sensitised or reactive skin, rosacea, acne, red veins, medically-compromised etc. we can tailor a corrective programme just for you and phase in a customised anti-ageing programme when your skin is stronger. All products mentioned should be used around the eyes as well as the rest of the face.

Your basic skincare routine if you are under 25 should look like this – remember this is also the basis for every other age skincare routine to build on:

Morning:

In your mid 20’s:
Start adding in a nutrient-rich serum day and night to counter the natural slow down of skin processes and the negative effects of pollution, hectic lifestyles and less-than-perfect food and drink choices. This will be the biggest step in dramatically slowing down the formation of lines and wrinkles in the future. Prevention is always better than cure!

Morning:
Rinse with water and a microfibre cloth
Apply Essential Nutrient Serum
Apply SPF30 Day Cream

Evening:
Cleanser with Skin Comfort Cleansing Oil
Apply Lipid Repair Concentrate 3 times a week, more often if skin is dry

In your early – mid 30’s:
Swap out your basic water-based serum for a more targeted collagen-supporting one. In your 30’s is when collagen production really begins to slow down and manifests later on the skin as lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores and thinning skin. Again, beginning a collagen boosting routine before you think you need it will pay off, as the changes are already happening deep in your skin that will show up in your late 30’s if you don’t target them early. It is a good time to switch to a richer, but still not greasy, night cream unless you have very oily skin.

Morning:

Apply SPF30 Day Cream

Evening:
Cleanser with Skin Comfort Cleansing Oil

In your late 30’s to early 40’s:
It’s time to add in a vitamin A product to normalise cellular turnover, reduce any lines and further slow the formation of new ones, keep pores clear and minimise pigmentation spots. Vitamin A will keep the surface texture of your skin smooth, fight lines and wrinkles and slow the progress of pigmentation spots.

Morning:
Rinse with water and a microfibre cloth
Apply Hydra Collagen Serum
Apply SPF30 Day Cream

Evening:
Cleanser with Skin Comfort Cleansing Oil
Apply Age Slowly Serum
Apply Lipid Repair Concentrate 3 times a week, more often if skin is dry

In your mid-late 40’s (women only)
This is time to add in a product to help balance the unwanted effects on the skin caused by declining oestrogen such as lip lines, crepey skin texture and dullness. Our Youth Boost add-in product is simply mixed with your regular cream to take care of these issues seen in peri-menopause and beyond.

Morning:

Evening:

In your 50’s and beyond:
There should be no need to change your skincare routine any further, the anti-ageing products you are already using will continue to supply all the nutritional benefits your skin needs. As oestrogen and collagen-forming ingredients further decline naturally in the body, your Hydra Collagen Serum and Youth Boost will keep working hard to balance these effects.

Using these products will keep your skin healthy and younger for a lot longer than using non-targeted, non-active, mass-market skincare products. Tips for neutralising blue light damage in your skin.

Did you know? We have a new source of free-radical skin damage to worry about now!
Blue light from your computer/mobile devices can have a negative impact on your skin. A recent report claims that four days computer time is the equivalent of twenty minutes exposure to the midday sun and that blue light goes deeper than UVA/UVB rays, accelerating oxidisation and damaging the vital skin barrier.

But don’t worry, you don’t have to bin your phone, just incorporate some simple tips to minimise the impact on your skin. For many of you, especially if you are already a Skin Essentials client, you will already be doing this so no change will be needed!

What is free-radical damage anyway?
Also known as oxidisation, free radical damage occurs when the skin is exposed to more biologically-stressing factors than it can effectively cope with. Our skin comes with naturally-occurring, in-built anti-oxidant capability but this can be easily overwhelmed in today’s world where almost everything we do, eat and apply adds to the oxidative stress load. Also, as we get older, these natural defence components of the skin reduce in concentration, meaning the older you are, the faster your skin will show damage from your environment. Yikes!

Of course, we have lots of help on hand for you in the form of topically-applied anti-oxidants that will offer immediate repair and also build long term strength to aid your skin cells in fighting the accelerated signs of ageing caused by free-radical damage.

Simply apply the advice below to drastically reduce the impact of blue light and other oxidants on your complexion.

1. Using a daily sunscreen with UVA/UVB filter and added anti-oxidants will protect you from blue light as well as sunlight. Another reason to make your daily SPF a last step in your skincare routine 365 days a year! Our daily SPF30 advanced protection cream will give you great protection while also supplying anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals.

2. Great ingredients in your skincare for repair are Vitamins C,A & E, green tea extract, dismutase super-oxide, niacin amide, ceramides, plant sterols. There are many, many anti-oxidants and the best approach is just like with your diet – get a variety for optimum skin health.

3. If you are over 35 your collagen will be breaking down faster then before so it is time to add a powerful serum full of ingredients targeted at helping the fibroblasts in your skin make and maintain good quality collagen for many years to come. Prevention is better than cure – how to delay the visible ageing process

I know I talk a lot about anti-ageing and how to reduce the visible signs of ageing on your face, particularly lines, wrinkles and sun spots. It is a subject very personal to me as I recently turned 45, a scary age!

But, I know there are a lot of you who are not yet at that stage and want to know how to start early to slow the onset of visible ageing as much as possible, so this post is for you.

First of all, you need to know your skin’s potential for ageing. How have past lifestyle factors influenced the way you might age? What is your genetic indication (not as important as you might think but still a helpful metric to measure)? How is your health? The answers to these questions along with many others, together with a physical skin examination, make up the basis of our skin analysis and this can be done in person or online. All of this information will give us powerful information from which to build your personal ageing profile and customise an anti-ageing profile for you.

Not there yet? Just need general advice about age prevention? No problem, there are lots of tips that are common to every skin type and issue. Here are some of my top Age Slowly tips:

-Use SPF30 daily and layer an anti-oxidant serum under it for extra Age Slowly power. I recommend Essential Nutrient Serum if you are under 30.
-Cleanse your skin gently every night whether you wear makeup or not. Never, ever scrub your skin.
-Moderate sugar, dairy and added salt in your diet. The less the better. Drink water, eat fruit and veg of all colours.
-Have facials as often as you can afford them, monthly if possible. Only go to the best, most reputable salon or clinic. Not near one? Having no treatment is better than having a bad – or inappropriate for you- treatment. Just up your homecare game with masks (weekly) and enzyme-based exfoliators (monthly).
-Stay out of direct sunlight as much as humanly possible, whatever the temperature.

At the salon:

-The best professional treatments to have for cellular age prevention are restorative treatments that use a lot of infusions, massage and bio-identical oils. As always, strictly no products containing perfumes, essential oils or sulphates should EVER touch your skin.

-Regular facials make a huge difference in your long-term skin health and appearance. Aim to have one at least every three months, if time and budget allow then monthly is even better. At Skin Essentials we customise your facial every time and facials can include modalities including ion+ therapy to deeply infuse active ingredients, lymphatic drainage massage to give your skin a lit-from-within glow while eliminating stagnation and puffiness, high frequency to purify breakout-prone skin or ultrasonic exfoliation to name a few. Facials should NEVER be cookie-cutter, one-size -fits-all.

LED light therapy is great for all skin types, my personal recommendation for amazing results. Use alone or add to any other treatment.

-For a more heavy-duty approach, starting clinical microneedling at the very first sign of fine lines will give you ‘collagen in the bank’ for future years. If you start in time, one or two single sessions of needling a year will stave off lines for a long time (provided of course that you are good with all other aspects of your skincare too, nothing will save you if you use sunbeds and sleep in your makeup)!

-Avoid all forms of mechanical exfoliation such as microdermabrasion. These will thin your skin and contribute to premature ageing. Peels are useful but only when used by a very competent therapist and for the right reasons, with the right ingredients for YOUR skin.
