What’s your type? Tips for each skin type.

Skin types listed on a face diagram by Skin Essentials by Mariga

What’s your type?

Do you find it difficult to choose a skincare product off the shelf ? There are so many, all claiming to be THE ONE that it’s no wonder the consumer is confused. After all, how are you supposed to know which new amazing-sounding high tech ingredient or ”new” plant extract is going to clear up that flaky patch on your chin or stop your make-up from sliding off your face an hour after you applied it? In an effort to categorise the products into something you might relate to yourself, most mass market companies divide their offerings into ”skin type”. You will see these as the words dry, dehydrated, combination, oily, normal, mature, sensitive, blemish-prone, delicate, fragile etc. etc.

Clear? I thought not!

In reality there are only three basic skin types that everyone will fall into to some degree: Lipid Dry, Oily and Permanent Diffuse Redness (ref: Florence Barrett-Hill, Advanced Skin Analysis).
The rest are just marketing terms and have nothing to do with the skin type that you are born with. ”But I have dry cheeks and an oily T-zone, isn’t that combination skin?” I hear you say. Well, yes and no. You may well be suffering from an imbalance in your skin that is causing these symptoms, but this is a correctable or treatable condition, not your basic skin type. Often, these skin conditions are caused by ongoing use of the incorrect products for your basic skin type.

How do you know which one you are? If you have mainly oily, mainly dry or predominately red skin with little to no secondary concerns then it’s easy, just treat at home for your skin type and get an appropriate facial every couple of months (see the links below for characteristics and tips on each skin type). But many people won’t be an extreme version of any type so to get an accurate analysis you must be diagnosed by a skincare professional. This will involve examining your skin under strong light and magnification, taking a detailed history of your skin and using a diagnostic device such as a skin scanner. A comprehensive skin analysis will take at least 90 minutes. You will come away with a full understanding of your skin, what has been wrong in the past, how to treat it and which products to use going forward. Your basic majority skin type will be explained, any current skin conditions addressed and questions answered. This detailed consultation is the only way to truly understand your skin and means that your salon treatment and homecare regime will be completely personalised for a real, long-term solution.

Once this information is in place you can really begin to get a handle on your own individual skin needs and address them daily. In this way your skin will get better and better over time, transient conditions such as dehydration, flaking, shine will become a thing of the past and your skin will be balanced and well-behaved. Generally speaking your basic daily homecare is geared toward caring for your skin TYPE while corrective serums to use at home and/or clinical treatments correct skin CONDITIONS.

Remember, all skin types will require anti-ageing at some point, this does not affect your basic skin type!

New – InfusION+ Therapy – a powerful add-on to your regular facial

NEW! InfusION+ therapy

We have introduced a new element to our bespoke facials here at Skin Essentials by Mariga, Wexford. You know we are always searching out the latest and best technology and ingredients to bring you the absolute maximum clinical results from your treatments :)

We can now incorporate the power of ION+ therapy into your facial. Choose from VitalfusION+ to brighten, revitalise and smooth a dull or sluggish skin, or LiftfusION+ for a tightening and radiance effect perfect before a big event when you want some extra wow factor for your skin! ION+ therapy will be used as part of your bespoke treatment when appropriate or you can specifically request it if you have an occasion coming up, be sure to let your therapist know! We do not charge extra for this powerful booster treatment – it is included in the regular price of your bespoke facial.

Ion therapy can also be taken in a series to deeply revitalise skin that has been neglected, or to delay the first signs of ageing when fine lines start to appear. It is also a great maintenance treatment between microneedling courses for maintaining skin texture, health and vitality.

Suitable for all skin types and issues as it is adapted for each client, the ION+ therapy is a universal facial. As it utilises a galvanic electric current to open channels in the skin to allow for deep active product penetration (it doesn’t hurt, it’s actually very relaxing), it is not suitable during pregnancy, for those with diabetes, epilepsy, or anyone with a lot of metal in their body such as plates or pins. (Fillings are ok).

NEW – The Perfector. A complete facial treatment for skin rejuvenation, red veins and milia.

I am SUPER excited to let you know about The Perfector – my latest treatment created with busy people like you in mind.

The only treatment of it’s kind available in Ireland

For the first time it is possible to have your anti-ageing skin treatment in combination with diathermy removal of red veins and milia. This is a truly complete facial that targets ALL of your skin issues in a single visit to Skin Essentials.

Merging three essential anti-ageing and complexion correction elements together for the first time, this treatment is exclusive to Skin Essentials, you will not find a similar treatment anywhere else in Ireland!

So many of you want to have facials for skin maintenance, brightening, breakouts or anti-ageing. BUT you also have an annoying visible red vein or two (or twenty, good old Irish weather), on your cheeks or perhaps some milia bumps around your eyes or those little skin tags on your neck or chest.

Well now you don’t have to decide which treatment you will have in your precious free time, The Perfector Facial gives you both.

In one 80 minute session, your skin will be deep cleansed, infused with a customised cocktail of vitamins and minerals, any clogged pores or blackheads extracted, milia and red veins treated with diathermy on face neck and chest, followed by a soothing mask treatment and finally 30 minutes of LED photo-modulation therapy customised to your needs, whether that is anti-ageing, anti-acne or anti-inflammatory. Phew!

This is a treatment that so many of us could use once a year or so (after a certain age!) to deal with the visible capillaries and other skin anomalies that are the result of sun exposure over the years, and just living life! We all get them, now you know the secret to getting rid of them :)

Particularly if you travel a long distance to see us here at Skin Essentias, I know this will be a great addition to your clinical routine, and save two separate trips for separate diathermy and facials

This treatment is currently only performed by myself, so appointments are limited and available Thursday – Saturday weekly. The cost per treatment is €150. Advance booking is recommended as I do get booked up quite far ahead!

Note: During The Perfector treatment, I will be able to remove an average of 20 small lesions such as red veins, milia and spider naevi. If you have dozens of lesions that need treatment you will need to schedule a follow up session.

Prevention is better than cure – how to delay the visible ageing process

Happy with your skin right now? Let us help you keep it that way. Prevention is always better than cure.

I know I talk a lot about anti-ageing and how to reduce the visible signs of ageing on your face, particularly lines, wrinkles and sun spots. It is a subject very personal to me as I recently turned 45, a scary age!

But, I know there are a lot of you who are not yet at that stage and want to know how to start early to slow the onset of visible ageing as much as possible, so this post is for you.

First of all, you need to know your skin’s potential for ageing. How have past lifestyle factors influenced the way you might age? What is your genetic indication (not as important as you might think but still a helpful metric to measure)? How is your health? The answers to these questions along with many others, together with a physical skin examination, make up the basis of our skin analysis and this can be done in person or online. All of this information will give us powerful information from which to build your personal ageing profile and customise an anti-ageing profile for you.

Not there yet? Just need general advice about age prevention? No problem, there are lots of tips that are common to every skin type and issue. Here are some of my top Age Slowly tips:

-Use SPF30 daily and layer an anti-oxidant serum under it for extra Age Slowly power. I recommend Essential Nutrient Serum if you are under 30.
-Cleanse your skin gently every night whether you wear makeup or not. Never, ever scrub your skin.
-Moderate sugar, dairy and added salt in your diet. The less the better. Drink water, eat fruit and veg of all colours.
-Have facials as often as you can afford them, monthly if possible. Only go to the best, most reputable salon or clinic. Not near one? Having no treatment is better than having a bad – or inappropriate for you- treatment. Just up your homecare game with masks (weekly) and enzyme-based exfoliators (monthly).
-Stay out of direct sunlight as much as humanly possible, whatever the temperature.

At the salon:

-The best professional treatments to have for cellular age prevention are restorative treatments that use a lot of infusions, massage and bio-identical oils. As always, strictly no products containing perfumes, essential oils or sulphates should EVER touch your skin.

-Regular facials make a huge difference in your long-term skin health and appearance. Aim to have one at least every three months, if time and budget allow then monthly is even better. At Skin Essentials we customise your facial every time and facials can include modalities including ion+ therapy to deeply infuse active ingredients, lymphatic drainage massage to give your skin a lit-from-within glow while eliminating stagnation and puffiness, high frequency to purify breakout-prone skin or ultrasonic exfoliation to name a few. Facials should NEVER be cookie-cutter, one-size -fits-all.

LED light therapy is great for all skin types, my personal recommendation for amazing results. Use alone or add to any other treatment.

-For a more heavy-duty approach, starting clinical microneedling at the very first sign of fine lines will give you ‘collagen in the bank’ for future years. If you start in time, one or two single sessions of needling a year will stave off lines for a long time (provided of course that you are good with all other aspects of your skincare too, nothing will save you if you use sunbeds and sleep in your makeup)!

-Avoid all forms of mechanical exfoliation such as microdermabrasion. These will thin your skin and contribute to premature ageing. Peels are useful but only when used by a very competent therapist and for the right reasons, with the right ingredients for YOUR skin.

New Serum – Daily Nutrient Serum is getting an update!

Daily Nutrient Serum is now being replaced with Essential Nutrient Serum.

daily-nutrient

This is the first time that Daily Nutrient Serum has been reformulated since we launched it in 2010!

So, what’s new?

The formula is more concentrated than ever, with added antioxidants and collagen boosting ingredients along with a larger hyaluronic acid molecule. As there is no longer water in the formula we don’t need the parabens any more, for those that have an issue with them (we don’t!). We have replaced some of the original ingredients with newer, ore powerful seaweed and plant extracts to keep up to date with the best advances on the market.

What does that mean for your skin?

You will still get the great skin nutrition, anti-ageing and anti-inflammatory effects of the old formula but with more skin repair power, collagen building ingredients and higher-performing hyaluronic acid, giving you plumper, brighter and more vitalised skin with even better age-slowing proerties. The formula is very slightly thicker, you may not even notice the change :)

What are the new ingredients?

Fucoxanthin -increases collagen synthesis and UV protection

Astaxanthin – an extremely powerful anti-oxidant to battle free radicals and repair oxidation damage which shows up as dull skin and premature ageing.

Hyaluronic Acid – included instead of sodium hyluronate, the bigger molecule holds more water and binds more water in the upper layers of the epidermis.

Essential Nutrient Serum is a more concentrated, more anti-inflammatory and more anti-oxidant serum than DNS.
It still has the water-based daily nutrients such as peptides, coconut endosperm, and anti-irritant bisabolol.

Suitable for:
-Younger skin before visible signs of ageing such as lines and wrinkles.
-First serum to use as an anti-ageing prevention (Change to Hydra Collagen serum once ageing becomes visible).
-Great for skin nutrition and calming after shaving for men.
-Improved soothing and calming for acne (anti-inflammatory)
-Use for first signs of rosacea in skin under 30.

Summary: Daily Nutrient Serum has been replaced by the more concentrated Essential Nutrient Serum which gives all the benefits of DNS but with added high-powered anti-oxidants for cell protection and anti-ageing, and added anti-inflammatory for cell protection and repair and anti-ageing and anti-redness.
