Glowing skincare for mums-to-be exclusive pregnancy skincare kit

Pregnancy skincare – the experts advice.

pregnancy skincare kit from skin essentials by mariga wexfordOne of the nicest things about being a skincare professional and having hands-on contact with our lovely clients all day means that we are often the first to hear the happy news that someone is expecting a baby.

Partly this is because newly expectant mums are usually dying to tell someone before it becomes general knowledge and they know there is the seal of the confessional in our treatments rooms!

But also, there is a practical reason and that is because there are some ingredients that you may want to avoid during pregnancy and we need to review your home and professional skincare routines to adapt for changing needs.

(Note: all the following applies to nursing mums as well as during pregnancy). Read on for our expert advice on pregnancy skincare…

Depending on the skincare routine you are on before becoming pregnant, it may be necessary for you to change some of your products.

Skincare containing Vitamin A, Retinol and Salicylic Acid are not recommended for use during pregnancy.

These ingredients are most often found in products aimed at acne control and anti-ageing. In the Skin Essentials by Mariga range the products containing these ingredients are Overnight Repair Cream, Age Slowly Serum, Blemish Control Cream and Salicylic Cleanser.

It is important to note that there is no evidence that using these skincare ingredients is in any way harmful to you or your baby. We do know that the prescription strength versions of these ingredients are not for use during pregnancy so it is just a precaution to avoid them altogether, even in the relatively tiny amounts and different forms present in skincare products.

If you are not sure whether your creams have these ingredients please ask your skincare professional for advice.

Some professional treatments, particularly peels, will contain various acids so you should let your therapist know before treatment if you are pregnant so that she can tailor your treatment accordingly.

Some electrical treatments are also contraindicated but you can still have a lovely, relaxing treatment to help keep your skin nourished and hydrated. At Skin Essentials we have a special nourishing facial perfect for expectant mums and also our treatment couch is fitted with adjustable pregnancy cushions to keep you comfy and supported right through to your due date.

It is not unusual for our clients to schedule an appointment with us a week before their date for some much-needed me-time!

During pregnancy, much of the nourishment that your body receives from your diet can go to your baby so the skin can suffer from lack of nutrients. You can counter this by using products rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.

I particularly recommend my Skin Comfort Oil, Skin Comfort Cream and Hyaluronic+ Moisture Boost Serum for this special time (You can use these on your tummy too).

Some women will experience pigment changes in the skin during pregnancy. These show up as brown patches on the face often referred to as ‘mask of pregnancy’.

This is very much down to genetic predisposition and can’t be prevented, but using a good SPF30 daily will prevent the marks from becoming permanent through UV exposure.

Some women will find that their skin becomes radiant, especially after the first trimester, giving that pregnancy ‘glow’. For others, unfortunately, the opposite can occur and many women experience a recurrence of long-forgotten acne.

As the actives to control breakouts are not suitable for use while pregnant the best that you can do is to keep your skin strong to help reduce the occurrence of spots.

Drink plenty of water and use skincare with nourishing oils as above and add a hyaluronic-acid based serum such as Hyaluronic+ Moisture Boost under your moisturiser to help prevent water loss which can lead to sensitivities and spots.

Getting plenty of sleep helps too (while you still can!)

I have created the Glowing Skin Kit to contain all of the water and oil based nutrients your skin will need to make sure you are a radiant mum-to-be. It is suitable for all skin types, except very oily, and can be used safely throughout pregnancy and during breast-feeding.

It makes a lovely gift for a special someone in your life or a beautiful treat for yourself!

Has winter aged your skin? Enzyme therapy will help!

Do you feel like the winter has aged you? Is your skin dull, sluggish, rough or patchy?

Don’t worry, you just need a skin reboot!

Enzyme therapy facials are perfect for skin that needs a boost after dull, drying winter has wreaked its havoc.

At Skin Essentials by Mariga’s Wexford-based skin clinic, we specialise in restoring and rejuvenating unresponsive and lacklustre skin to a beautiful, radiant healthy glow.

Utilising the rejuvenating power of natural fruit enzymes we create a series of three treatments especially for your skin which will progressively smooth, brighten, hydrate, nourish and restore your skin to a smooth, radiant, youthful complexion.

For a deep skin restoration effect, you will have three treatments, 10-14 days apart, each tailored on the results of the last, to achieve maximum cellular stimulation. Then move on to monthly maintenance treatments to ensure your skin stays in great condition all year round.

Each enzyme therapy facial takes 45 minutes and prices start at €68 per treatment.
(You can upgrade to a deluxe 60 minute facial for even more luxury and relaxation)!

As well as the customised enzyme therapy each facial includes a comforting plant extract mask tailored for your skin on the day, biodynamic drainage or tension release facial massage, extractions if necessary and a hot stone shoulder massage. Bliss!

Some of the many fruit enzymes we may use in your customised treatment include passionfruit for firming and rejuvenating, raspberry for calming, peach for skin softening or papaya for exfoliation. But no matter which we choose, your treatment will be blissfully relaxing as well as deeply supporting for your skin, inside and out.

Skin benefits of home rolling / microneedling

Why do at home microneedling?

Cosmetic needling, also known as dermal rolling, is performed at home between clinical microneedling treatments to enhance the results obtained.

It is a complementing home therapy intended to boost outcomes, rather than a separate treatment.

When we do home needling we are working on and influencing the epidermis, the outermost layers of the skin. This releases epidermal growth factors within the skin structure which results in thickening and strengthening of the epidermis giving you a smoother more even texture.

Cosmetic home needling, which is done at a depth of no more than 0.3 mm, also enhances penetration of your recommended active ingredients increasing their penetration by up to 8 times.

Home needling in conjunction with clinical depth treatments will show enhanced results versus clinical needling alone.

Read all about our exclusive Bio-therapeutic needling programmes

All skin types and conditions can benefit from home rolling 2-3 times per week as long as it is done with the correct technique and using the right products for your skin’s requirements.

(See video below for Mariga’s demo on best technique for home rolling).

Your therapist will recommend the best Skin Essentials By Mariga serum for your individual home needling requirements, but in general Hydra Collagen Serum is a good choice for those on an anti ageing programme.

For those using needling treatment to help reduce acne scarring your therapist may recommend Hyaluronic Moisture Boost Serum for a younger skin type or perhaps Essential Nutrient Serum for those who are prone to inflammation.

If you are using home needling as a preventative or general part of your skincare routine and are not having clinical needling treatments for correction, you can use your home roller 2 to 3 times a week with your regular Skin Essentials serum.

If in doubt, the Hyaluronic+ Moisture Boost serum is a universal product that will benefit all skin types when used in conjunction with home rolling.

See our home rolling kit here for a great value option on a starter kit.

At Skin Essentials, we are huge fans of microneedling and have seen fantastic results on all skin conditions over the years from wrinkles to sagging skin, rosacea to scars.

But it is also carries risks if not performed correctly so it is very important to purchase your home roller from an authorised source.

There are many cheap versions available on the internet but these cannot be authenticated and may often be substandard tools. With the potential for skin damage associated with inferior rollers, it is never worth it to buy from an unknown source.

Remember, it is inappropriate to ever use needles deeper than 0.3 mm or to use any skincare product that has not been recommended for you in conjunction with your needling.

A good quality roller will last 4-6 months depending on how often you use it, and will then need to be replaced as the needles become blunt over time with repeated use.

Skin consultation or analysis – which is right for you?

What is a skin consultation and how is it different from a skin analysis?

We offer two very distinct options for our first-time clients. You can have a skin consultation or you can have a skin analysis.

So how do you know which you need?

A consultation is used to determine the answer to one question. For example, you might have a blemish such as pigmentation patch or some milia and would like to know if and how we can treat that for you.

Another type of consultation is to have one of our professionals assess your skin in order to match you to the correct Skin Essentials home-care products for your skin’s needs. These are quick consultations for our therapists to perform and are free of charge.

ask mariga a question on skincare

A skin analysis on the other hand is an in-depth look at the past history of all influences on your skin, such as medical, genetic, cosmetic and lifestyle factors, along with examining your skin under various scopes and taking digital readings of various markers in the skin structure to determine why your skin is presenting the way it is today.

This analysis is used to develop a plan of action including clinical treatment, lifestyle changes and home-care in order to correct a skin condition or multiple conditions such as premature ageing, skin inflammation, rosacea, acne breakouts or general sluggish, dysfunctional skin.

Do you:

  • Have a specific question about a lesion, skin condition or treatment?
  • Wonder if a particular treatment is suitable for your skin concern?
  • Have a medical condition that you think might make you unsuitable to a treatment or product?
  • Then just pop in to us for a 5-10 minute chat and we will be happy to advise you on the next steps to take.

You don’t need an appointment on weekdays to pop in for quick chat but on Saturdays you do! We are always happy to answer a question for you and there is no charge for dropping in to ask us anything!

Do you:

  • Have no particular skin problems but want to start with preventative anti-ageing
  • Want to start a new skincare routine for general skin health skin but don’t know what you should be using.
  • Then just call us to arrange a free-of-charge product matching service, where we will examine your skin, take a brief medical overview to determine contra-indications and prepare a recommended home-care regime for your needs. This takes just 15 minutes and in done in the privacy of one of our consultation rooms.

Do you:

  • Have problematic skin that is never ‘just right’
  • Tend to react to products or treatment
  • Find yourself ageing suddenly or having any other sudden change in the overall appearance of your skin
  • Suffer from rosacea, acne or overly sensitive skin
  • Have acne scarring

Then you need a skin analysis to determine why this is happening so that we can catch triggers at their source to effect real change in the skin’s behaviour and appearance, not just treat symptoms as they appear which only gives short-term results.

Online Assessments

We also offer online assessments which combine elements of consultation/analysis. Along with determining skin type, condition, unique triggers and your concerns, we use a precise questionnaire to create a digital profile.

These answers are combined with photo assessment and follow-up calls or emails to craft a bespoke homecare plan to address your skin needs and concerns.

Mariga pioneered this unique online skin clinic and Skin Essentials were the first in Europe to bring this service to distance clients who we have been successfully treating since 2010. Cost €65.
