Sunscreen / SPF FAQ’s – what tan is a safe tan?

A good SPF should be the last step in every morning skincare routine, every day of the year. But there are a few things that are more specifically related to summer time / high UV index that you may find of help. Click the video below to see my detailed advice on safe tanning/tanning through SPF and how it is that your skin might darken over the summer months even though you are scrupulous with your SPF.

100ml sunscreen spf 30 cylindrical squeeze bottle image

Things to know:

  • You may still tan through a properly applied SPF (see video for details), this type of tan will not harm your skin’s health or beauty.
  • Sunscreen can be physical or chemical in it’s action – I prefer physical (mineral) SPF, and so does the environment.
  • ALL sunscreens need to be reapplied every 2 hours when outdoors in direct heat, more often if swimming.
  • Through your eyes and your surface skin cells (keratinocytes) are two of the ways your body detects and processes the levels of UV in your environment and reacts accordingly, making colour pigment to protect your cells. So cool.
  • Darker skin tones have a longer-reaching deposit system from their pigment-creating cells, meaning the colour gets much nearer the surface then in lighter skin tone, giving a darker complexion and more natural protection (although sunscreen is still needed).
  • Tanning beds and booths are dangerous for both the health and beauty of your skin.
  • A sunburn does not turn into a suntan! One is direct damage, the other is a protection system. A pale-skinned person will not experience a sunburn ‘turning into” a suntan. You DO NOT need to burn to tan. (Big myth from my childhood)!!

Offer ends Sat 14th July

These past few weeks have felt like we’re living in the Mediterranean, but the drying effects aren’t only visible in the soil, it’s also damaging our skin.

That’s why we’re launching our very special offer this week to help repair your skin from the sun!

For this week only, get our Advanced Protection SPF30 & Age Slowly Serum package for just €95 (RRP €112)Sun repair special offer kit from skin essentials by mariga, skincare experts

SPF30: As you know you should always use SPF30 to protect your skin from ageing and damage but did you know that Skin Essentials SPF is so much more than a sunscreen?

It contains added Vitamins, Minerals, and anti-oxidants to protect against and repair cellular damage caused by UV rays to skin cells.

Use daily over your chosen serum

Age Slowly Serum: So much more than an anti-ageing serum, this is our Vitamin A powerhouse product.

Vitamin A is the hero ingredient that normalises cell function while you sleep, aiding repair, protecting against further pigmentation damage and keeping your skin functioning at it’s best.

In addition, one of the major ways that UV rays age our skin is by speeding up the breakdown of collagen fibres. Age Slowly Serum is also high in collagen peptides to help repair this damage.

Use at night under your chosen cream.

Sun ages skin by:

  • Creating free radicals that weaken our cellular function
  • Increasing MMP enzyme production in the skin which accelerates collagen fiber breakdown
  • Disrupting normal pigment activity leading to dark patches
  • Accelerating elastin breakdown

Counter this with:

  • Anti-oxidants to repair free radical damage
  • Colagen peptides to boost our own collagen building activity
  • Vitamin A to normalise cell activity and repair damage
  • SPF to guard against burning

3 Surprising Things That Can Make You Look Older

I spend most of my time helping people to look younger and advising on products, treatments and tips for looking as young as possible in a healthy, natural way.

But of course the other side of this is avoiding things that make you look older.

We all know that an unhealthy lifestyle, sun exposure, bad products for your skin etc. will age you over time, but here are some surprising things that I think make people look older than they are and are easily correctable!

1. Heavy makeup, especially foundation. As we get older we need to revise our makeup routines. Many liquid and cream foundations settle in lines and actually make them look deeper.

  • Heavy under-eye concealer will even make you look like you have lines that aren’t even really there, particularly when set with a heavy powder. Less is definitely more! Look for dewy tinted moisturisers, mineral foundations and light textures.
  • The aim is radiance, not coverage. Do you still use full coverage foundation to mask less-than-perfect skin? Then it’s time to invest in some advanced skin treatments to sort that out once and for all.

2. Overdone botox. Having too much botox or getting topped up too often always looks to me like unnatural, plasticky skin, especially on the forehead.

  • Subtle botox should not be noticeable like this (each to their own, it’s not for me, but if you are going to have it, please, please make sure it’s subtle).
  • I think that this overdone anti-wrinkle injections can make a 30-something look like a 40-something with botox, not a 30 year old. Like with the makeup, less is more!

3. Exfoliation. The darling treatment of social media posts and clueless beauty ‘gurus’, indiscriminate exfoliation will strip the natural moisturising factor and lipids from your skin leaving it dull, rough and crinkly.

  • This applies to home exfoliation product that is too harsh or applied too often, or to salon treatments such as microdermabrasion or peels applied inappropriately.
  • YOUR SKIN NEEDS ITS BARRIER TO BE HEALTHY. STOP STRIPPING IT. Yes, the short term pay off is makeup that applies smoothly for a day, but you will end up with prematurely aged skin that is a battle to restore.
  • The only safe home exfoliators in my opinion are gentle enzymes of papaya or pumpkin, and then used only once or twice a month.

New and improved formula – Daily Nutrient Serum is now Essential Nutrient Serum

New Essential Nutrient Serum from Skin Essentials:

Daily Serum is now more concentrated and paraben-free

Close up pic of 30ml Daily Essentials Nutrient Serum from Skin Essentials by mariga, wexford. Airless pump bottle for sensitive, oily or dehydrated skin

Summary: Daily Nutrient Serum has been replaced by the more concentrated Essential Nutrient Serum which gives all the benefits of DNS, but with added high-powered anti-oxidants for cell protection and anti-ageing, and added anti-inflammatory for cell protection and repair and anti-ageing AND anti-redness, phew!

Active Ingredients in new serum NOT in Daily Nutrient Serum:

(increases collagen synthesis and UV protection) Fucoidans are sulfated polysaccharides with structures that depend on the plant source and growing conditions.

Applied to the skin, fucoidan will increase the density of collagen bundles, decrease activity of proteases (enzymes that break down dermal proteins), increase scavenging of free radicals and increase cell proliferation.

These effects would be mediated through increased expression of ß1-integrin and may also help with wound healing.

Because of its particular molecular structure, astaxanthin serves as an extremely powerful antioxidant.

It has a very effective quenching effect against singlet oxygen, a powerful scavenging ability for lipid and free radicals and effectively breaks peroxide chain reactions.

Carotenoids are effective at low oxygen concentrations, complementing the activity of vitamin E which is effective at higher oxygen concentrations.

Astaxanthin has also been shown to enhance and modulate the immune system. The antioxidant and immunomodulating activities, in combination or separately, may reduce the acute inflammation reaction that follows excessive exposure to UV radiation for the skin and tissue just beneath the skin.

Hyaluronic Acid
Included instead of sodium hyluronate, the bigger molecule holds more water and binds water in the upper layers of the epidermis. Will not draw water from lower epidermal layers in dry air.

The formula is now water-free so no parabens (more concentrated)

  • Ingredients in DNS NOT in new serum
  • water, parabens
  • Laminara Japonica extract
  • Arthrospira
  • Sea kelp extracts
  • Sodium hyaluronate
    (See above)

Essential Nutrient Serum is a more concentrated, more anti-inflammatory and more anti-oxidant serum than Daily Nutrient Serum.

It still has the water-based daily nutrients such as peptides, coconut endosperm, and anti-irritant bisabolol.

The hyaluronic acid bigger molecule makes it more moisturising and a little thicker.

Suitable for:

  • Younger skin
  • Men after shaving
  • Change to other serum once ageing becomes a concern
  • Better for acne anti-inflammatory
  • Use for younger rosacea where anti-ageing not yet needed

Rosacea – a surprising treatment

One rosacea treatment that I have found to help greatly with controlling the visible symptoms of redness, flushing and bumpiness is microneedling.

It may seem counter-intuitive at first that stimulating the skin with micro-fine needles can actually calm the symptoms of rosacea but it does exactly that.

It works by stimulating collagen production in the dermal layer of your skin which strengthens and thickens both the dermal and epidermal layer.

This means that the skin is more resistant to the triggers that cause the redness and flushing normally associated with rosacea.

Over time it also reduces the rough and bumpy texture that some forms of rosacea produce. If you have breakouts with your rosacea then you can still have microneedling but only at times when the skin is calm, not during an episode of breakouts.

A course of three is recommended to see best results (6 if you also have deep lines or acne scarring) and these are taken 4 weeks apart. You will also need to use appropriate homecare to complement and boost your treatments.

This will be recommended for you based on a consultation before treatment begins.

All of our bio-therapeutic microneedling treatments include a personalised 30 minute LED phototherapy session which is very beneficial for rosacea-prone skin, helping to further calm inflammation and speed up healing.

You can begin slowly by using a home roller and this is also beneficial during and after a course of clinical microneedling to maintain skin benefits.Microneedling, home roller system, rosacea, skin essentials wexford
